Hans van de Ven
Johan "Hans" van de Ven (born January 10, 1958 ) is a British historian and expert on the history of China in the 19th and 20th centuries. He is Professor of Chinese History at the University of Cambridge and since 1988 Fellow and Director of Studies in Asian and Middle Eastern Studies at St Catharine's College . He first studied Sinology at the University of Leiden and then did his doctorate at Harvard on the history of the Chinese Communist Party . His doctoral supervisor was Philip Kuhn . After a stay at the University of California, Berkeley , he took up his position in Cambridge in 1988.
