The Rijksweg A22 ( Autosnelweg 22 ) is a motorway in the Dutch province of North Holland . It begins at the knooppunt Velsen motorway triangle in the east of Velserbroek , where it branches off from the A9 . Then crosses under the North Sea Canal in the Velsertunnel and ends after 8 km at the knooppunt Beverwijk , where it joins the A9 again. This makes the A22 the shortest motorway in the Netherlands.
Until 1996, the A9 ran over today's A22, then the Wijkertunnel was opened, whereby the A9 led through this tunnel and the old section was renamed the A22. Before that, a section east of Utrecht , which is now part of the A27 , had the street name A22.
