The Rijksweg 31 (abbreviation: RW 31 ) - Short form: Autosnelweg 31 (abbreviation: A31 ) / autoroute 31 (abbreviation: N31 ) - is a Dutch motorway , the village Zurich via Harlingen and Leeuwarden with Drachten connects. Only between Harlingen and Leeuwarden is Rijksweg 31 a motorway, the remaining sections are country roads, some of which have been expanded to form expressways. In addition, the A31 is one of the few motorways in the Netherlands that is not directly connected to other motorways.

Hook from Leeuwarden

The section of the A31 between the Marssum junction and the intersection with the N32 is known as the hook of Leeuwarden . There are several plans to expand it as a motorway. In addition, a new bridge over the Van Harinxmakanaal must be built. According to the plans, the Marssum junction and the intersection with the N32 are to be converted into a Knooppunt. The city council of Leeuwarden approved the construction of the Knooppunt Werpsterhoek (N32) on August 31, 2009.

In addition, a new Leeuwarden Werpsterhoek station is to be built.

Wâldwei

As Wâldwei the portion between Leeuwarden-Hemriksein (N32) and the Knooppunt Drachten is referred to. Between 2003 and 2008 this section was expanded to 2x2 lanes and since then has 5 exits. The largest part of the construction work was the construction of the new Langdeel bridges and the doubling of the Fonejachtbrug. On January 21, 2008, the Rijkswaterstaat opened the section to traffic.

Drachten-Emmen

After Drachten , the N31 continues as the N381 in the direction of Emmen .

There are plans to expand the section between Klazienaveen and Drachten to four lanes.
