The Rijksweg 74 (abbreviation: RW 74 ) - Short form: Autosnelweg 74 (abbreviation: A74 ) - is a Dutch highway , the south, the east-west direction to Venlo runs. From the Tiglia Rijksweg 73 motorway junction (A73), it creates a one and a half kilometer connection to the German A 61 to Nettetal-Kaldenkirchen .
Closing the gap, although only a few kilometers long, has been highly controversial for many years because it runs through the Venlo city area and residents of the various routes under discussion feared emissions (exhaust gases, noise). At the same time, the residents of the city streets, where the A61 ends so far, campaigned for the construction of the bypass. The planning of this project took over 20 years.
- 1995 - Official start of the planning process for the A 74 / A 61.
- 1998 - Environmental impact study and route concept
- 2002 - Ministerial decision for one of the planning options
- 2003 - First route draft, failed due to objections to environmental impacts (fine dust / fine dust directive )
- 2007/2009 - adaptation and new draft
At the end of 2009, the specific route planning was signed by the responsible ministers. Construction work began in October 2010. There is a new Nettetal-West ascent and descent on the German side, which is intended to serve the new industrial area VENETE ( Ve nlo Ne ttetal- Te gelen). The old section of the A61 motorway was dismantled and the road routing was directed into the new industrial area, and traffic was opened on April 4, 2012. The occasion was the Floriade in Venlo, comparable to the Federal Garden Show in Germany.
Specialty
There is no direct connection from Rijksweg 73 towards Venlo to Rijksweg 74 towards the German border and vice versa. If you want to switch between the two motorways, you have to turn at the Venlo-Zuid junction on Rijksweg 73.
