Course of the road

The Rijksweg 16 is a Dutch motorway, Antwerp and Rotterdam together. It runs through the provinces of North Brabant and South Holland .
The motorway runs over three major rivers, the Hollands Diep (over the Moerdijkbrug ), the Oude Maas (through the Drecht tunnel ) and the Nieuwe Maas (over the Van Brienenoordbrug ).
The A16 is part of the Europastraße 19 throughout . In addition, there are always a lot of tourists on the A16, which means there are often traffic jams and slow traffic , especially in summer . South of Breda, the motorway passes the extensive Mastbos forest .
Non-existent exits 1–13
Due to the joint routing of the A16 with the A58 between the Knooppunt Galder and the Knooppunt Princeville, there is a common exit for both motorways in the area, exit 15. If the A16 were normally numbered, starting with 1, this exit would have to be numbered twice . In order not to have to do this, the A16 begins with exit 14, so exit 15 only has one number. This procedure is carried out on several motorways in the Netherlands, such as B. on the A2 and A67 .
Original plans
It was originally planned that the Rijksweg 16 in the north of Rotterdam should begin district Terbregseplein, from there east of Zoetermeer and suffering , past Hoofddorp, Haarlem , just west past Assendelft , Alkmaar and Schagen up to Van Ewijksluis the north of the province of North Holland run should where it should flow into the N9 (now N99 ). At the end of the 1970s this plan was discarded; What remained was the Wijkertunnel , through which the A9 runs today.
Connection with the A13
Between 2012 and 2014 the A16 was to be extended by ten kilometers and connected to the A13 . The route was to run from Knooppunt Terbregseplein past Rotterdam Airport to the A13 near Delft . The work is not expected to start until 2017.
