Location of the Feijenoord district in Rotterdam |
Feijenoord is a municipality of Rotterdam . The district is located on the southern bank of the Nieuwe Maas opposite the city center. 74,040 inhabitants live in it on 8.55 km², of which 1.91 km² are water.
Feijenoord developed in the late 19th and 20th centuries when the port of Rotterdam expanded rapidly after the completion of the Nieuwe Waterweg . The port grew on the south side of the Nieuwe Maas, numerous workers settled there, so that the quarter became a working-class area.
After the port moved further and further west towards the North Sea after the Second World War and the containerization also ensured that only a fraction of the workers were needed in the port, the district increasingly fell into disrepair. The Katendrecht district in Feijenoord degenerated from a general seaman's and entertainment district into a pure red light district. Since the 1990s, the part of Feijenoord closest to the city center, the Kop van Zuid , has been the target of an ambitious urban renewal program.
Internationally he is best known for the local sports club Feyenoord Rotterdam , which plays its home games in De Kuip .
In Feijenoord you will find the Essalam Mosque , the largest mosque in the Netherlands and Western Europe.
