Location of the Delfshaven district in Rotterdam |
Delfshaven is a district of Rotterdam on the right bank of the Nieuwe Maas . The district with 75,835 inhabitants on 5.96 km² developed from the river port of the city of Delft , which lies around 13 kilometers to the north , was an independent city from 1811 and has belonged to Rotterdam since 1886, with which it has grown together completely.
history
The port of Delfshaven is no longer in active operation, but serves as a museum harbor. It is surrounded by numerous museums and renovated old town houses, making Delfshaven one of the few areas of Rotterdam that still has an intact old town. Special sights are the pilgrims' church, in which they celebrated their last service before leaving, the monument to Piet Pieterszoon Heyn , Scheepswerf De Delft on which the ship De Delft from 1773 is faithfully recreated and De Dubbelde Palmboom, the museum for Rotterdam history. As a result, a large number of bars and restaurants have accumulated there.
The port was built in 1389. Delft, which has no direct connection to the sea, created a port 13 kilometers south of the city in order to be able to participate directly in maritime trade and no longer have to pay the Rotterdam duties and taxes. A necessary prerequisite for this was the construction of the Delfshavense Schie , a canal that linked Delft to the Nieuwe Maas. The city suffered from the hook-and-cod war and was only able to prosper economically at the beginning of the 15th century.
The main industries were fishing, whaling , shipbuilding and genever distillery . In addition, the city had several town mills for grinding grain and malt, one of which was rebuilt in 1986 near the site of the destroyed previous mill, the De Distilleerketel windmill .
The Dutch East India Company had important shipyards in the district. In July 1620 some of the Pilgrim Fathers left Delfshaven with the Speedwell .
A special feature even for Rotterdam is the high proportion of the allochton population. In Delfshaven it is 71.5% in the district of Spangen as much as 87%. The largest groups in it are Turks, Moroccans and Surinamers, who each make up around 20% of the population.
