Genever
Genever or Jenever is a juniper brandy of Dutch or Belgian origin with at least 35 % vol. Alcohol content . It is a forerunner of gin that has been cultivated in a traditional recipe to this day . The cities of Schiedam in the Netherlands and Hasselt in Belgium are especially known for the production of this distillate . The name is derived from the Dutch ( jeneverbes ) or French ( genévrier or genièvre ) term for juniper .
Manufacturing
It is mostly made from barley or rye malt . Juniper, sometimes also caraway , anise and coriander are added to flavor . Originally one wanted to cover up the fusel taste caused by the inadequate distillation technique at the time . From 1575 onwards, Lucas Bols distilled some spirits in his distillery on the outskirts of Amsterdam based on the spices that were handled in his city . Wynand Fockink was an important producer of genever . In East Friesland is Frisian Korngenever made.
history
The 17th century Dutch physician and scientist Franciscus Sylvius is named in numerous sources as the inventor of the Genever . However, there is historical evidence that genever was a popular social drink under this name as early as the late 16th century.

Liqueurs
Genever is used as the basis for various liqueurs in the Netherlands and Flanders. Are known:

- Creamjenever - mixture of jenever, cream and aromatic ingredients, such as B. chocolate , coconut or fruits
- Fladderak - similar to Citroenjenever, with cinnamon and other spices (previously often drunk in Groningen and Drenthe )
