Schiedam ( municipality in the Dutch province of South Holland and, according to the CBS, had 78,098 inhabitants on January 31, 2019 . The total area of the municipality is 19.86 km² and it includes the city of Schiedam and the village of Kethel.
) is a town andLocation and economy
Schiedam is located immediately west of Rotterdam , but is not to be regarded as its suburb. The city is connected to Delft and its eastern neighbor by car and railways ; Since 2002 there has also been an underground connection to Rotterdam. To the west of the city is the municipality of Vlaardingen .
The city lies on the small river Schie and the Nieuwe Maas .
Schiedam has a number of shipyards and other companies associated with the port of Rotterdam. But spirits ( jenever ) are still important to the city's economy today.
history
The city was founded around 1250 when a Mr. Dirk (Dietrich) Bokel, who owned the surrounding polders , had Mathenesse Castle and a dam built in the Schie River. The fishing village got a parish church in 1262. The Count of Holland , Floris V , granted the place town charter in 1275. But it was not until 75 years later that Schiedam was allowed to build a city fortification. The city did not flourish as much as its neighbor and competitor Rotterdam , as Schiedam's harbor kept silting up.
The first schnapps distilleries appeared in Schiedam around 1590 . This trade determined Schiedam's economy until around 1890, when sales of these beverages declined, partly due to better education about the dangers of high alcohol consumption . The period between 1890 and 1950 was a time of bitter poverty in Schiedam, there was even famine from time to time (the novel Geert Maks The Century of My Father gives literary evidence ). After the Second World War , Schiedam benefited from the development of the Rotterdam port operations and the social misery disappeared.
On May 4, 1976, the Schiedam railway accident occurred .

Attractions
The slums of the Schiedam city center have been replaced by new buildings from the post-war period. But there are also many monuments ( Rijksmonument ) that have been preserved, including thanks to a timely and competent restoration.
The cityscape is characterized by the six classic, very high (all larger than 30 m) stone windmills - including the De Kameel windmill , newly built in 2011 - and a new mill from 2006, some of which - including the new one - can be visited. The completely new mill De Nolet , a kind of wind turbine (for the distillery of the same name ) in the shell of a classic, round brick gallery windmill with a cap that can be rotated through 360 ° and blade tracking with codend, has been the tallest windmill in the world since March 3, 2006 at 43 m (55 meters with vertical wing position). The malt mill and restaurant (on the lower three floors) De Noord from 1803 (the previous building De Noort Moole from 1707 was demolished and then rebuilt as De Noord closer to the water due to better wind conditions; the foundation stones of both mills are embedded in the outer wall) the height record up to the completion of De Nolet with 33.5 m. In the 19th century, Schiedam had 20 of these tall brick mills , which mainly grinded malt for the distilleries and bakery products .
The St. Janskerk (Johanniskirche) is a three- aisled hall church that was built in 1425. The St. Lidwina Basilica dates from 1881 and contains relics of St. Lidwina . The ruins of Mathenesse Castle, some stately houses on the canals and the town hall (1782) are also worth seeing.
The Nationaal Jenever Museum on a canal in the city center is dedicated to schnapps.
The municipal museum shows local history and modern art , including works by the CoBrA painter group .
