Marinus Harm "Rien" Poortvliet (born August 7, 1932 in Schiedam , † September 15, 1995 in Soest ) was a Dutch painter and draftsman . He is considered one of the world's best painters of animals and hunting scenes and was the most famous painter in the Netherlands in the last decades of the 20th century . In addition to hunting scenes, his subjects were landscapes and domestic animals as well as everyday situations.

Rien Poortvliet was the son of Zacharias Poortvliet and the eldest of four brothers. His father was a plasterer and later an office worker.

His talent for drawing showed at a young age. His devout Protestant parents, however, did not want him to go to an art academy , so after finishing school he started at an advertising agency .

Poortvliet then began to illustrate some books, and later to write some himself, which were dominated by his drawings, to which he added brief descriptions and anecdotes. He achieved international fame in 1976 together with co-author Wil Huygen with the book Leven en werken van de Kabouter (1978 in German under the title The big book of the brownies ). The animated series David the Kabauter was developed based on this.

Rien Poortvliet was married to Corrie Bouman and they had two sons.
