Soest ( listen ? / I ) [ sust ] is a municipality in the province of Utrecht . The Dutch city ​​of Soest is twinned with Soest in Germany . Audio file / audio sample

Not only the main town Soest belongs to the municipality, but also the village Soesterberg and the villa settlement Soestduinen in the forest. The village of Soestdijk is partly part of Soest. The Soestdijk palace , where the Dutch Queen Juliana lived with her husband Bernhard zur Lippe-Biesterfeld , is located on the land of the neighboring municipality of Baarn .

location

Soest is located 20 kilometers northeast of the city of Utrecht and seven kilometers west of Amersfoort . These cities can be reached from here by train or by car. Soest lies on the border of the sandy forest area "Utrechtse Heuvelrug" and the polder of the river Eem (see Amersfoort ).

history

Soest emerged in the Middle Ages as a farming village around a "narrow" (=  Anger or Allmende ). Of this, the village church, built around 1400, has been preserved. The location made it a popular residence for (initially wealthy) commuters after 1870.

economy

There are many small industrial and trading companies in Soest. Tourism and agriculture are also of some importance.

Many commuters who work in Amsterdam , Utrecht or Amersfoort live in Soest . In Soesterberg there is a Dutch military base, which was used as the Soesterberg military airfield until 2008 .
