history
The municipality of Renswoude is located in the eastern part of the province of Utrecht. Renswoude was mentioned in a document as early as 855 as silva Hrenhem ("Rhenens Forest"), but the settlement itself did not emerge until around 1400. At that time Renswoude consisted of a fortified house, called Borgwal , and a few scattered farms. In 1654 Johan van Reede , the brother of Godart van Reede , built a castle near the former Borgwal and founded the village, which initially only consisted of the long Dorpsstraat ("Dorfstraße") with houses loosely arranged on both sides. In 1639 van Reede had a domed church built in the village.
In 1674 Renswoude became a so-called "Hooge en vrije heerlijkheid" , an area with its own independent jurisdiction. The municipality of Renswoude emerged from this in 1795. In 1849 the governor of the province of Utrecht sought a merger, but this did not materialize. In 1969 there were plans to merge Renswoude with Woudenberg and Scherpenzeel , which also failed. Even after that, there were repeatedly unsuccessful plans to withdraw Renswoude's status as an independent municipality.
location
Renswoude is located in the Gelderse Vallei, a valley in Gelderland that stretches from the Veluwe to the Utrechtse Heuvelrug and which was an almost uninhabitable wasteland with swampy moors and sand drifts until the year 1000. Even later, settlement in the very humid area was only possible on terps . In the 15th and 16th centuries, the area around Renswoude was mainly used for peat extraction. With the reinforcement of the Grebbe dike and the construction of the Slaper dike in the 17th century, the land became extensively arable.
