The Veluwe is the largest contiguous forest area (around 1100 km²) in the Netherlands . It is located on the mountain range of the same name, up to 110 m high, in the province of Gelderland, directly southeast of the Veluwemeeres and the other Veluwerand seas . Part of the area is protected by the De Hoge Veluwe National Park.

Landscape structure

There are mainly mixed pine forests on sandy geest soil . Many of these forests were planted in the 18th and 19th centuries, as the sand drifts at that time threatened agriculture and the wood was supposed to be used for housing, mining and paper production. It is characterized by frequent dunes and smaller lakes . Agriculture is practiced on the edge of the Veluwe . However, there are also heather areas that are carefully protected. The local height runs from 10 meters to the highest point, Signaal Imbosch, at 109.90 m, northeast of Arnhem ; the Torenberg west of Apeldoorn reaches 107 m. There are some viewpoints. The reintroduction of bison in the Veluwe has been successful so far.

Cities and municipalities in and around the Veluwe are Apeldoorn , Barneveld , Dieren , Ede , Elburg , Epe , Ermelo , Harderwijk , Hattem , Heerde , Nijkerk , Nunspeet , Oldebroek , Putten , Garderen , Rheden , Scherpenzeel , Wageningen . Parts of the Veluwe extend into the city of Arnhem . The Veluwe is roughly delimited by the places Hattem - Apeldoorn - Dieren - Arnhem - Wageningen - Ede - Harderwijk.

The Veluwe is a magnet for tourism both from Germany and especially from the Netherlands itself. There are many camping facilities , hotels and restaurants . There is also a dense network of bicycle and riding trails . The tourist focus of the Veluwe is in the area around the Veluwemeeres (Harderwijk) along the traffic axis Zwolle - Amsterdam . The Veluwe was a traditional hunting ground . a. for the Dutch royal family. A few kilometers north of Arnhem there is still a zoo and the open-air museum (Dutch: Openluchtmuseum ), which is well worth seeing , where the residential architecture from bygone times and former life in the Dutch provinces are impressively shown. The Hoge Veluwe National Park also offers the important Kröller-Müller Museum with a large Van Gogh collection and the sculpture park at the Kröller-Müller Museum with modern sculptures. In Apeldoorn , the former Palace of Het Loo (residence of the former Queen Wilhelmina, now the Museum of the Royal House of Orange-Nassau ). The Heath of the Veluwe already noted the company of Margrave Carl Friedrich von Baden during his trip to the Netherlands in a letter dated October 25, 1780. The court medicus Dr. Johann Christoph Buch wrote: “... we left Arnhem and continued the tear to Loo, where we only arrived happily in the afternoon at 3 o'clock because nothing but heather and a deep clear quicksand (note:“ Woeste Hoeve ”) could be torn through ... ".

traffic

The Veluwe is affected in the northwest by the Autobahn 28 and the parallel railway line Zwolle - Amersfoort - Amsterdam . To the south runs the Autobahn 1 and the parallel railway from Deventer via Amersfoort to Amsterdam. In the east, the Veluwe is affected by the Autobahn 50 and the parallel railway from Deventer to Zwolle. For the sake of the animal world, some “eco-products” ( green bridges ) were built over the motorways .
