history
Apeldoorn was first mentioned in a document under the Latin name Apoldro / Appoldro in 792/793 during the reign of the Frankish King Charles . In the Middle Ages , justice was given in a place in the middle of the forest that is now called "Het Herenhul". A small forest path between Apeldoorn and Beekbergen is therefore still called "Richtersweg". In 1689 Wilhelm III. , Governor of the Netherlands and King of England , build the pleasure palace Het Loo . Since then, members of the House of Orange have always lived in Apeldoorn, until Het Loo was rededicated in a museum after the death of Queen Wilhelmina . This circumstance and the location were the reason for many Hague state officials and other people to buy a villa or a smaller apartment with a garden in Apeldoorn from around 1850 onwards. As a result, Apeldoorn expanded from a farming village to a villa town with many green spaces.
The clear, clean streams, on-site blast named since the 18th century promoted the settlement of paper industry and laundries.
The Second World War and the German occupation from 1940–1945 did not leave Apeldoorn untouched either. It was a center of resistance sheet printing . The Jewish psychiatric institution Het Apeldoornsche Bosch was evacuated by the National Socialists and almost all residents and employees (around 1300) died in the concentration camps . In autumn 1944, the German Wehrmacht, with the support of the NSB, carried out two large raids to recruit forced laborers for the construction of defensive positions near Doesburg , Zevenaar and Rees . The liberation took place on April 17, 1945.
After 1960, Apeldoorn quickly grew to its present day wealth and scope. In 1968 the Theological University of Apeldoorn was founded. The government's decision to relocate many authorities - such as the tax office - from the overcrowded west to smaller cities created many new jobs in Apeldoorn and made it necessary to build many new apartments and districts.
Eight people died in a rampage on Koninginnedag 2009 , including the perpetrator himself and several people were injured. The perpetrator wanted to drive his small car into the royal family's bus during the parade festivities, but before that he lost control of his vehicle, which came to a standstill after it hit a monument.
economy
Due to its central location, many service companies, authorities and wholesalers have settled in Apeldoorn. These include insurance companies, the Dutch land registry , some departments of the tax authorities, including other IT , several clinics (also in Beekbergen), paper wholesalers, laundries and a home for juvenile offenders in Hoenderloo. There is also industry, including for metal goods, bread and cakes, paper and machines. The dispatch center of Apple Inc. for Central Europe is also located here. There are a total of 92,294 jobs in the city of Apeldoorn. Tourism is also very important. There are several hotels and campsites in the municipality.
The city is on the German-Dutch holiday route Oranier Route .
