Douwe Eisenga

Douwe Eisenga (* 1961 in Apeldoorn ) is a Dutch composer . His best-known work is the Requiem Aeternam 1953 , a composition commissioned by the Dutch government on the 50th anniversary of the flood disaster of 1953 .

Life

Eisenga began to write music for theater, film and video productions as an autodidact in the 1980s . From 1990 to 1996 he studied composition with Julius Ament and Wim Dirriwachter at the Prins Claus Conservatory in Groningen .

In recent years he has written various works for the Xenakis Ensemble, the Francis B. Quartet and the pianists Gerard Bouwhuis and Marcel Worms, among others . In 1999 his CD Rivius II was released with Rien Balkenende on the piano. In 2001, Worms Eisengas included the piece Growing worm, stabbing his back-part slowly into the blues on his CD More new blues for piano . In the same year Eisenga performed his chamber music piece Kabaal (Kabale) about the Dutch admiral and sea hero Michiel de Ruyter (1606–1676) in Vlissingen as part of the Zeeland Nazomer Festival (Zealand Autumn Festival) .

In 2003, Requiem Aeternam 1953 , a composition for choir and orchestra, was premiered at the commemoration ceremony on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the flood disaster of 1953. In the same year, his piano concerto (part 3), written on behalf of the New Music Foundation, premiered and was performed by Gerard Bouwhuis and the Xenakis Ensemble in Yokohama . In 2004 a large part of his oeuvre was performed in a concert at the Center for New Music in Zeeland .

Eisenga's work is anchored in pop music in line with his generation . He makes no distinction between pop songs , twelve-tone techniques, baroque music or Eastern-inspired cyclical templates and knows how to combine these different elements in his compositions.

Eisenga has lived in Zeeland since 1993 .
