Luuk Balkestein

Luuk Balkestein (born April 9, 1954 in Apeldoorn ) is a former Dutch football player .

The defender rose as a regular in the first team in 1975 with Sparta Rotterdam in the Eredivisie . In five seasons he was in the top division for Sparta 158 times, scoring six goals. He then moved to local rivals Feyenoord in 1980 , where he only ran up 17 times in two seasons and scored three goals. With Feyenoord he also played five times in European Cup and once in the UEFA Cup competition . When he played in the UEFA Cup at Dynamo Dresden on November 4, 1981, he scored his only goal in an international competition: his 1: 1 equalization in the 90th minute meant progress for Feyenoord and the end for the GDR representative.

Shortly before his move to Feyenoord, he was appointed to the Dutch national team once . On March 26, 1980, he played one half against France at 0-0 in Paris , but was substituted for Willy van de Kerkhof during the break .

From 1995 to 2001 Balkestein was a scout at sc Heerenveen , and since then he has been working in the same position at the German first division club Borussia Mönchengladbach .

His son Pim Balkestein also plays soccer; in the 2010/11 season he is under contract with Brentford FC .
