Stefan Lievestro

Stefan Lievestro (* 1964 in Apeldoorn ) is a Dutch jazz bassist.

Lievestro had his first piano lessons when he was eight years old; In secondary school he switched from guitar to electric and later to acoustic bass. In 1989 he finished his studies at the Hilversum Conservatory summa cum laude . In 1990, a grant from the Dutch government enabled him to study with Marc Johnson in New York. In 1991 he was honored as the best soloist at the Karlovy Vary Jazz Festival .

In the years that followed, Lievestro worked with musicians such as Nat Adderley , Freddie Hubbard , Dee Dee Bridgewater , Jimmy Cobb , Philip Catherine , Art Porter , Spike Robinson , Stacy Rowles , Horace Parlan , Bob Berg , Myriam Alter and Ivan Paduart . In 1996 he made his first solo recordings of his own compositions with Gary Novak , the Chick Corea Quartet , Thierry Eliez and Dee Dee Bridgewater.

Lievestro leads two of his own bands: Lievestro6 (with Jesse van Ruller , Harmen Fraanje , Jasper Blom , Mete Erker and Hans van Oosterhout ), with whom he recorded the album Breakfast in Walhalla , and Mona Lisa Overdrive (with Arno Krijger , Hans van Oosterhout and Jesse van Ruller), with whom he recorded Picnic at Bikini . He is also part of Jasper van't Hof's quartet and trio .

In 2005 Lievestro received the Deloitte Jazz Award in Amsterdam . In 2007 he was artistic director of the Jazz International Festival in Rotterdam. He teaches bass at the Hogeschool Gent and at the Rotterdam Conservatory.
