Jasper Blom
Jasper Blom (born June 2, 1965 in Geldrop ) is a Dutch jazz musician ( tenor and soprano saxophone , composition ).
Live and act
Blom studied at the Rotterdam Conservatory, where he graduated cum laude in 1989 . He then went to New York for six months to take lessons from Dave Liebman , Bob Brookmeyer , Greg Osby and Joe Lovano . After returning from North America in 1990 he founded the quintet Zut Alors! , of which Angelo Verploegen , Michael Moore , Tony Overwater and Jo Krause also belonged. Then he belonged to the quintet Five Up High (initially with Benjamin Herman and Juraj Stanik ) and the double quartet by Pierre Courbois . He has also performed with musicians such as Lee Konitz , Chet Baker , Nat Adderley , George Duke , Randy Crawford and Conrad Herwig .
In addition, he leads various of his own formations: The Jasper Blom Quartet has existed since 2006 (with Jesse van Ruller , Frans van der Hoeven and Martijn Vink ), with which he recorded the album Statue of Liberty in 2007, which was followed by further albums in 2010, 2012 and 2015. He also leads the trio Red, Yellow and Blue (with Frans van der Hoeven and Martijn Vink), which the North Sea Jazz Festival 2004 Eivind eagle and the Jazz International Rotterdam Festival in 2006 with Nelson Veras , Peter Bernstein and Frank Möbus occurred and a Duo with the pianist Harmen Fraanje , which can also be expanded into a trio or quartet. He leads the Dialect quartet with David Berkman , with which Tom Rainey , Matt Wilson , Eric Surménian and Ed Schuller have performed.
He also plays in an improvisation trio with Arnold Dooyeweerd and Flin van Hemmen . With Joris Roelofs , Kris Goessens , Clemens van der Feen and Joost Lijbaart , he forms the Ensemble a l'Improviste . With the Denis Gäbel Trio he recorded the album Keep on Rollin ' . He is also a member of the sextet by Stefan Lievestro , the wind octet by Florian Ross , the sextet by Pierre Courbois, the improvisation octet Spinifex , the band by Fernando Lameirinhas , Corrie van Binsbergens Grote Brokken and the band Tripod by Francien van Tuinen . He is also a member of David Kweksilber's big band .
Blom teaches jazz saxophone at the Amsterdam Conservatory . He has received the European Jazz Award twice. In 2019 he received the most prestigious jazz prize in the Netherlands, the Boy Edgar Prize : he is considered one of the most important tenor and soprano saxophonists on the Dutch jazz scene and is known for his synthesis of jazz, pop, classical and improvised music.
