David Kweksilber (born February 12, 1973 ) is a Dutch musician ( clarinet , saxophone , composition, big band leader) who has emerged in new music as well as in improvised music and jazz .

Live and act

Kweksilber, whose mother was the soprano Marjanne Kweksilber (1944–2008), studied saxophone with Leo van Oostrom and clarinet with Pierre Woudenberg until 2000 at the Conservatory of The Hague . Then he continued his studies with Charles Neidich in New York; he also took lessons from Gary Smulyan , Andy Statman , Jim Snidero , Robert Dick and Michael Rabinowitz .

In 2002 he presented himself in a solo concert at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam , where he presented new works composed for him by Guus Janssen , Maarten Altena and Gilius van Bergeijk . At the suggestion of the Vereniging van Jazz en Improvisatiemuziekpodia , Kweksilber went on the Young VIP Tour 2002 with his Kwektet, which includes Janssen, Sjeng Schupp and Hans van der Meer . He also worked as a soloist with the Metropole Orkest . With his program Let's Face the Music and Dance he performed at the North Sea Jazz Festival in 2003 . He also interpreted classical music and went on an Asian tour with Guus Janssen.

In 2008 he presented his David Kweksilber Big Band for the first time at the Holland Festival , which includes classics such as the City of Glass by Robert Graettinger and the Ebony Concerto by Igor Stravinsky alongside new works by Hilary Jeffery , Cor Fuhler , Loek Dikker , Peter van Bergen and Jorrit Dijkstra , Maarten Altena, Corrie van Binsbergen or himself. He was also active in the ensembles of Dirk Polak , Maarten Altena, Paul Termos , Laura Fygi and Corrie van Binsbergen as well as with Asko | Schönberg , The Beau Hunks and the New Cool Collective Big Band .

Prizes and awards

In 1998 Kweksilber won the Persprijs der Freunde des Concertgebouw and the Nicolai-prijs for classical saxophone. In 2000 the Elisabeth Everts Prijs followed. In 2003 he received the Deloitte Jazz Award .
