Gary Smulyan (* 4. April 1956 in Bethpage , New York ) is an American baritone saxophonist of modern jazz .

Live and act

Gary Smulyan graduated from New York University (SUNY) and worked at Woody Hermans Young Thundering Herd in the late 1970s . In addition to this activity, he had his own formation with Roland Hanna , Ray Drummond and Kenny Washington . Smulyan also played with the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra , the Mel Lewis Big Band (1988/89), the Dave Holland Big Band, the Mingus Big Band ( Gunslinging Birds 1994), Jan Menu and the Dizzy Gillespie All Star Big Band.

Smulyan's greatest influence is the baritone style of Pepper Adams ; When Adams died, Smulyan recorded an album in 1991 entitled Homage (on Criss Cross Records ) of compositions by the saxophonist. Smulyan was also involved in the recordings of Gene Harris (1990), Mike LeDonne (1988), Renée Manning (1991) and Bob Schneiderman (1991).

Gary Smulyan has been a lecturer at the Berkshire Hills Music Academy in South Hadley , Massachusetts since 2006 . He lives with his wife, the pianist and conductor Joan Cornachio and his family at Amherst .
