Oyster Bay is a town in eastern Nassau County on Long Island in the US state of New York . The administrative seat is in the hamlet of the same name .
history
The town was originally (from 1640 at the latest) a part of New Amsterdam . In 1667 it became independent in the course of the dissolution of Nieuw Nederland . It belonged to Queens County until 1898, but when it moved to New York City it broke up into the newly formed Nassau County together with Hempstead , North Hempstead , Glen Cove and Long Beach .
geography
The Town of Oyster Bay is located on Long Island and stretches south from Long Island Sound to South Oyster Bay and the open Atlantic Ocean . Adjacent to the west are the other two towns of Nassau County, North Hempstead and south of it Hempstead . In addition, the urban area in the northwest encloses that of the City of Glen Cove , without Glen Cove being part of Oyster Bay. The eastern border of Oyster Bay forms the border between Nassau and Suffolk Counties .
According to the United States Census Bureau , the town has a total area of 439 km², of which 270 km² is land and 169 km² (= 38.42%) is water. The landscape corresponds to the predominant distribution on Long Island: the north shore is mostly hilly, on the south shore there are sandy beaches, and in between there is a plain.
The 1990 and 2000 census figures are not directly comparable because the town swapped territories with both Hempstead (Nassau County) and Babylon (Suffolk County). In addition, the Town of Huntington in Suffolk County has ceded areas to Oyster Bay.
