The Town of Hempstead is one of three towns in Nassau County, New York . The administrative unit is bordered to the north by North Hempstead , to the east by Oyster Bay and to the west by New York City .

Hempstead covers about 495 km ² and has about 760,000 inhabitants. This makes it one of the largest cities in New York and more densely populated than most major US cities.

According to the United States Census Bureau , the town has a total area of ​​495.5 km ² , of which 310.7 km ² is land and 184.8 km ² (= 37.30%) is water.

Hempstead borders the New York borough of Queens to the west . To the north are the towns of North Hempstead and Oyster Bay and to the east Hempstead borders on Oyster Bay. The main line of Long Island Rail Road and the Old Country Road in Garden City run through the town's area. The southern border is the Atlantic Ocean with Atlantic Beach, Lido Beach, Point Lookout and Jones Beach . This is a day trip destination for residents of Long Island and residents of New York City.

The "Five Towns"

"Five Towns" ("five cities") are an informal association of villages and hamlets in the Hempstead area on the south coast of Long Island. Contrary to the name, none of these places is a town . The "five cities" include the villages of Lawrence and Cedarhurst, the hamlets of Woodmere and Inwood and "The Hewletts" (consisting of the villages of Hewlett Bay Park, Hewlett Harbor and Hewlett Neck and the hamlet of Hewlett), plus Woodsburgh.

Sports

Hempstead is home to the Long Island Lizards , who play in the USA's professional field lacrosse ( Major League Lacrosse ). The Hofstra University stadium is also home to the professional footballers of the New York Cosmos . Right next to it is the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum , where the New York Islanders played their home games of the NHL until 2015 . In addition, the town hosted the Goodwill Games in 1998 and a number of international matches in women's football .
