Mark Mobius

Joseph Mark Mobius (born August 17, 1936 in Hempstead , New York ) is an American portfolio manager and Managing Director of the Templeton Emerging Markets Fund Inc. at Franklin Templeton Investments . He is considered the "old master of Asian stocks" and is a pioneer for global equity investments in emerging markets .

Life

Mobius was born to German and Puerto Rican parents in Hempstead , New York. He earned a bachelor's and master's degree from Boston University . His university career also took him to the universities of Wisconsin , New Mexico , Kyoto, and eventually received a doctorate in economics and political science from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology .

Mark Mobius ran his own consultancy firm in Hong Kong and eventually became a director at the international investment firm Vickers da Costa in Hong Kong. In 1983 he opened a branch in Taiwan and from there managed activities in Indonesia , India , Thailand , Korea and the Philippines .

From 1983 to 1986, Mark Mobius was a director of the International Investment Trust Company , Taiwan's first and largest capital management company. In 1987 Sir John Templeton brought him to Franklin Templeton Investments , where he assumed responsibility for all emerging markets operations as Chairman . By 2016 he managed 11 investment funds with a focus on the emerging markets and frontier markets and managed 15 offices in emerging markets .

Attention in the financial industry and the general public

In 1999, Mark Mobius was appointed Chairman of the Investor Responsibility Taskforce of the Global Corporate Governance Forum by the World Bank and the OECD . He is perceived in the media as an expert on Asian stocks and has received numerous nicknames such as “Yul Brynner of Wall Street”, “Emerging Market Guru” or “Indiana Jones of Investments” due to his numerous trips around the globe. The portfolio manager is the author of various books and writes his own blog .

In the documentary Let's Make Money , Mobius describes the business model of his clients.
