Everlast
Everlast (born August 18, 1969 in Valley Stream , Long Island , New York ; real name Erik Francis Schrody ) is an American hip hop and crossover musician . He was a member of House of Pain and the hip-hop supergroup La Coka Nostra . The alias Whitey Ford , which Schrody often uses alongside Everlast , refers to the successful baseball player Whitey Ford and alludes to his whiteness ( Whitey is considered a corresponding opposite to nigger ), as he is considered one of the first recognized white rappers.
Life
Erik Schrody grew up in the San Fernando Valley in Southern California. Under the pseudonym Erik Rocks Everlasting , which was shortened to Everlast after a short time , he began making music early, inspired by Run DMC , among others . In 1986 Everlast became a member of Ice-Ts Rhyme Syndicate at the age of 17 and released his first solo album Forever Everlasting at the age of 21 , which, however, was not commercially successful. A few years later, however, Everlast confessed to the American magazine Spin : “I thank God every day that the album flopped. I could have been vanilla ice . That would have been the end. ”During the time at Rhyme Syndicate he also got to know the alternative rapper Divine Style , who appears repeatedly in his career. For example with the Scheme Team on the third House of Pain album; he also produced a track on Whitey Ford Sings The Blues .
Everlast left the Rhyme Syndicate and his record company after differences with Ice-T and formed House of Pain with friends Danny O'Connor (Danny Boy) and Leor DiMant ( DJ Lethal ) . The debut album of the same name went platinum thanks to the hit single Jump Around in the USA and House Of Pain became one of the first successful white hip-hop groups. The two following albums were less successful, however; the band broke up in 1996.
While at House of Pain, Everlast founded the clothing brand Not Guilty with artist Estevan Oriol . The label no longer exists, but Oriol has its own brand with "Joker".
In 1996, Everlast converted to Islam while also starting work on his new solo album Whitey Ford Sings The Blues . On the last day of the album's recording, a congenital heart defect led to a heart attack and he was given an artificial heart valve in an emergency operation at the Cedars Sinai Hospital. Whitey Ford Sings The Blues was released in 1998 and was a great success based on the stylistically relatively new mix of electric and acoustic guitars with rap. In the USA, the album went three times platinum, the single What It's Like was nominated for a Grammy and is still his best-known song.
2000 Everlast got together with Carlos Santana a Grammy for Put Your Lights On , which he wrote. The song first appeared on Santana's album Supernatural and in the same year on Everlast's next solo project, the Today EP , a mini-album with 8 (or 5 in the American edition) tracks. Here Everlast showed his willingness to experiment: The live recording of What It's Like is over eight minutes long, an unusual length for a hip-hop piece.
In 2000, Everlast 's third regular solo album was Eat At Whitey's . Despite good reviews in the trade press, the album could not build on the success of its predecessor in the USA and missed the gold award. In Germany the album was more successful and reached eleventh place in the album charts.
It wasn't until 2004 that Everlast released their fourth solo album, White Trash Beautiful . The opinions of the critics were mixed, many fans were disappointed with the next big step towards singer-songwriter music and the album became a commercial flop in America; after only a week it fell out of the Billboard Top 100. In Germany the album reached the top 20 and stayed in the charts for a few weeks. The single "White Trash Beautiful" made it to number 16 in the single charts in Germany.
In the same year "Everlast - Live in Concert from the Playboy Mansion" was released, a DVD with only seven songs, five of them from the current album. The expectations of the fans, who had waited in vain for a live DVD for a long time, were disappointed, as the Playboy Girls Gillian Bonner, Shannon Stewart and Natalia Sokolova can be seen most of the time, and the camera work seems unprofessional.
The debut album A Brand You Can Trust by his new group La Coka Nostra , consisting essentially of Ill Bill , Slaine and Danny Boy and DJ Lethal from House of Pain , was released in 2009 and is characterized by frequent use of electric guitars and drastic social criticism out.
The solo album Love, War and the Ghost of Whitey Ford , released in September 2008, increasingly includes influences from oriental music, which is probably due to Everlast's conversion to Islam and electro beats.
Everlast can look back on numerous guest appearances on songs & remixes by other artists, B. Madonna , Kurupt , Cypress Hill , Sick of It All , Dilated Peoples , Prince Paul , Xzibit , Lordz Of Brooklyn , Ill Bill , Danny Diablo , Swollen Members , Korn or Limp Bizkit , with whose front man Fred Durst he had an argument and called him "Fake Everlast".
