Vanilla ice
Vanilla Ice , real name Robert Matthew Van Winkle (born October 31, 1967 in Miami Lakes , Florida ), is one of the first white rappers with commercial success.
Career
His breakthrough came in 1990 with the single Ice, Ice Baby , which topped the charts in both the US and the UK. This track is based on a sample from the song Under Pressure , recorded by Queen and David Bowie . His debut album Hooked , released in 1989, was then re-released a year later under the name To the Extreme and was number 1 on the Billboard charts for 16 weeks . The single went platinum in the United States for one million copies sold, the album even seven times platinum. At the time, he was the most successful rapper.
The rapper lost his reputation in the scene through interviews in which he made false statements about his past and other artists in the genre such as Eminem made fun of him. The punk rock band The Offspring mentions him in the song Pretty Fly (for a White Guy) , which is about recognition in the milieu and artistic credibility . With Play That Funky Music as the second single, he achieved yet another success. The song is based on the hit of the same name by Wild Cherry . As part of the US comedy show In Living Color was a sarcastic music video in which Jim Carrey under the title White, White Baby Vanilla Ice and his top hit parodies. In 1991 Vanilla Ice released his film Cool as Ice . In 2001 his hit number Ice, Ice Baby was re-recorded by Reanimator and achieved smaller sales successes. In March 2007 Ice, Ice Baby was named “Reanimator feat. Big Daddi & Vanilla Ice “was released again in Europe with some remixes from the electro and hip hop area. He also took on the song Boom in 1996 with the Bloodhound Gang .
In the meantime, Vanilla Ice was only called V-Ice, so that, according to his own statement, he was no longer associated with his only known song. The album Platinum Underground , released in 2005, was released again under its better-known stage name Vanilla Ice and shows a clear change in style. In addition to a new version of Ice, Ice Baby, there are also many crossover- style songs on it with electric guitars and electronic effects.
In 2010 he returned to the UK charts with his big hit when Jedward's Irish twins sang the song on the talent show The X Factor and later released a recording with him as a single. They reached number 1 in Ireland and number 2 in the UK charts.
Since 2010 he has been featured in his home improvement and home renovation program The Vanilla Ice Project . In 2011 he took part in the sixth season of the British figure skating show Dancing on Ice . In 2012 he played himself in an extended supporting role in The Chaos Dad alongside Adam Sandler and in 2020 in the romantic comedy "The wrong Missy".
