The Offspring is an American punk rock band from Orange County , California .

history

In 1984 Bryan "Dexter" Holland and Greg Kriesel decided after a concert by Social Distortion in Orange County / California to form a band themselves. They called this Manic Subsidal . Kevin Wasserman started as a guitarist. There were first appearances in San Francisco and Santa Cruz . In 1986 the band was renamed The Offspring (Engl. "The Descendants"). In the same year they released 1000 copies of the singles I'll Be Waiting and Blackball under their own Black label . After drummer James Lilja left, Ron Welty, who was only 16 at the time, joined the team.

In 1989 the band switched to the independent label Nemesis / Cargo and released their debut album The Offspring . It also contains the song Kill the President , which has not been found on reprints of the record since 2001. In 1991 the seven-inch EP Baghdad was published . In 1992 Ignition was released by Epitaph Records . The album later sold over a million times after the group became known. Then the band went on tour through the USA with Pennywise and the Lunachicks . In Europe they played as the opening act for NOFX .

The Offspring made their commercial breakthrough with the release of their third studio album, Smash . The album includes tracks like Self Esteem , Come Out and Play (Keep 'Em Separated), and Gotta Get Away . The record sold over eleven million times worldwide. Finally, the band signed a record deal with Columbia Records , where their fourth album Ixnay on the Hombre was released in 1997 with the single releases I Choose , The Meaning of Life , All I Want and Gone Away . Jello Biafra can be heard as a guest on the album. The legal situation was not clear, however, so that the album was only released in the USA by Columbia, but otherwise still by Epitaph.

The album Americana , released in 1998, sold around 15 million times. In 1999 The Offspring played at Woodstock III and then toured Japan and Australia. The band made a guest appearance in the horror film Idle Hands , where they played a cover of the Ramones song I Wanna Be Sedated and the song Beheaded from their first album. In the arcade and Dreamcast games Crazy Taxi and Crazy Taxi 2 from 1999 and 2001, music from the band was predominantly used.

Her sixth album Conspiracy of One was released in 2000. The band was sued for selling T-shirts with the Napster logo on the Internet. In defense, Dexter said, "I just wanted to share the logo with our fans". Original Prankster (on which the rapper Redman had a guest appearance), Want You Bad and Million Miles Away were released as singles from the album . Also in 2000, she recorded the song Bloodstains by Agent Orange for the soundtrack of the wrestling comedy Ready to Rumble (with David Arquette and Scott Caan on).

In 2001 the band Defy You recorded the soundtrack for the film Nix wie raus aus Orange County . The Offspring received a Kerrang! Award from Shirley Manson in 2002 . In 2003, The Offspring again covered “I Wanna Be Sedated” by the Ramones for the tribute album We're a Happy Family , for which artists such as U2 , Green Day , Marilyn Manson , Rob Zombie , Metallica and the Red Hot Chili Peppers songs were included grossed. In the same year, drummer Ron Welty left the band. Josh Freese initially replaced him when recording the new album. The band visited Hawaii and recorded a surf video with the Da Hui surf troupe. The recordings were added as an extra to the new album, which was released under the title Splinter . The first single was Hit That . Atom Willard replaced Freese, who had temporarily stepped in as a drummer. Can't Get My Head Around You became the second single, while the third single, Spare Me the Details , was only released in the US. In February 2004 the album started a world tour that included 97 concerts in 22 countries.

In May 2004 the band took part in the Rock Against Bush compilation with the title Baghdad . On July 27, 2007, Pete Parada, who had already played for Saves the Day and Face to Face , replaced previous drummer Adam Willard , who wanted to concentrate mainly on his then other band, Angels & Airwaves . In June 2008 the album Rise and Fall, Rage and Grace was released . The first single was the song Hammerhead , which was played live at the Summer Sonic Festival in Japan in 2007 . The album debuted at number 10 in the USA , which was a significant improvement compared to the previous album Splinter , which only reached number 30 in the first week. In Japan, the album reached number 3 in the first week and sold around 50,000 copies. The album reached number 13 in the German charts.

In March 2009, guitarist "Noodles" announced that singer Dexter Holland was working with producer Bob Rock in Hawaii on the band's ninth album. With the release of the single of the same name, the album Days Go By was announced in May 2012. It was released on June 26, 2012. On January 30, 2015, the single Coming for You was released.
