Pennywise is a punk band from Hermosa Beach , California , founded in 1988 , which is assigned to Melodic Hardcore . With over three million albums sold (as of 2007), they are one of the most successful independent punk bands and one of the pioneers of melodic hardcore.
The name
The namesake of the band is the clown Pennywise from Stephen King's novel Es ( It ) (see lyrics "Pennywise" on the album of the same name from 1991). In English, the word “pennywise” only exists in the fixed expression “to be penny-wise and pound-foolish”. He describes the misconduct of being frugal with penny amounts, but at the same time throwing large sums of money out of the window, ie "saving at the wrong end". As a reference to this saying, the publishers of some Pennywise albums call themselves “Pound Foolish”.
history
The band was founded in 1988 by Jim Lindberg (vocals), Fletcher Dragge (guitar), Jason Thirsk (bass) and Byron McMackin (drums). Since 1991 they have released their albums on Epitaph Records , where other well-known skatepunk / melodycore bands such as NOFX or Bad Religion are or were under contract.
Since the album About Time was released in 1995, the formation has also been successful in the charts around the world and is still very popular in the scene today.
The band released their ninth album Reason to Believe on March 25, 2008 in the USA for free on Myspace . The free download was available for two weeks, after which it appeared conventionally in stores. In Europe this album was also released by Epitaph.
In August 2009 singer Jim Lindberg separated from the band after 19 years. On September 3, 2009 it was announced that Pennywise would be supported by Ignite singer Zoltán Téglás at the shows at the Smokeout Festival . This interim solution became permanent in February 2010. The first album in the new line-up with the title All or Nothing was released on May 1, 2012 again via Epitaph Records.
In 2011 they were on tour in Germany and in 2012 again gave several concerts in German-speaking countries as part of their European tour. After Zoli Téglás collapsed several times due to back problems while performing at the With Full Force Festival, the band canceled all further appearances in 2012. In October 2012, the band announced that Jim Lindberg would be back and permanently replace the injured Zoli Téglás.
On July 15, 2014, the eleventh studio album Yesterdays was released on Epitaph Records.
style
Pennywise usually uses sophisticated, socially critical, often also political texts. The music style is comparatively “hard”, more aggressive Melodic Hardcore.

Bro Hymn Tribute
Main article: Bro hymn
“Bro Hymn Tribute” is played at the end of every concert. It died in 1996 bassist Jason Thirsk dedicated that either accidentally shot or when cleaning a gun suicide committed, the latter as a likely true. Randy Bradbury later joined him as the new bass player.
The song appeared on the albums Full Circle , Live @ The Key Club, and originally on Pennywise . The text was slightly changed (the full name of the bassist was added instead of the names of three friends of the band). In addition, the Bro Hymn is also played as goal music for VfB Stuttgart , the Philadelphia Flyers , the Anaheim Ducks , the Blue Devils Weiden , FC Wacker Innsbruck , KRC Genk and EHC Biel , as well as running-in music for the Recklinghausen Chargers . On the guitars and basses of the band members, the initials of Jason Matthew Thirsk - JMT - are represented by a sticker or a metal plate.
Others
The band and especially their former front man Zoli Téglás support the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society .
