The Recklinghausen Chargers are an American football club from Recklinghausen in the Ruhr area in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia .

history

The 1. AFC Recklinghausen Chargers was founded on June 30, 1983 by former youth players of the Herne Tigers. In 1984 the Chargers took part in official league operations for the first time and started in what was then the Oberliga Nord.

The greatest success was the participation in the Bundesliga, today's GFL , in 1987. But after only one year you had to relegate to the second division again. Then the Chargers commuted between the second and fourth leagues.

In 2007 the Chargers were champions of the Oberliga NRW and were promoted to the Regionalliga West. In the 2009 season, the second place was achieved, which entitled to promotion relegation to the GFL 2. The two relegation games were successfully completed, so that the Chargers competed in the GFL 2 North in the 2010 season. Here, however, no win and only two draws could be achieved in 14 games, which is why the Chargers had to relegate back to the regional league as bottom of the table for the 2011 season. Even in 2011 in the Regionalliga West, the Chargers could not win a game despite a promising start to the season with a newly formed squad and played in the major league in 2012.

In 2017 the men of the Recklinghausen Chargers managed to return to the top division. On October 21, 2017, the boys from Hohenhorst fought a thrilling final against the Wuppertal Greyhounds, who also played for promotion. In front of almost 1200 spectators at the Yellow Jump, the Chargers secured promotion to the top division with a tight result of 8:10 (0: 7). This was the second ascent in a row.

Teams

In the 2018 season, the Chargers competed with the seniors in the major league. They also provided a youth team in the U-16 and U-19 categories.

Fan Club

Since 2007 the Recklinghausen Chargers also have a very active fan club. After the end of the NFL Europe, the "Burgundy Heat" switched from their original club, Düsseldorf Rhein Fire, to the Chargers, as some of the members had been following the Chargers for many years.
