Bro Hymn is a song by the American melodic hardcore band Pennywise . It was written in tribute to the band's late friends Tim Colvin, Carlos Canton and Tom Nichols by Jason Matthew Thirsk , the band's bassist. It was first released on the 1991 debut album Pennywise .

Due to the very memorable chorus of the song, it found its way into the fan culture of various sports. It has become one of the most played songs, especially in football stadiums . It is played as the goal anthem for VfB Stuttgart , the Philadelphia Flyers , the Anaheim Ducks , the Blue Devils Weiden , FC Wacker Innsbruck , the KRC Genk and the EHC Biel , as well as the warm-up music for the Recklinghausen Chargers . As a result, the song is also known to a large audience outside of the punk scene.

Bro Hymn Tribute

In 1996, Jason Matthew Thirsk died of an unexplained gunshot wound and was replaced by Randy Bradbury. The exact cause of death has not yet been adequately clarified: Either he committed suicide (Thirsk had suffered from depressive attacks for years) or a shot was accidentally fired while cleaning a weapon, which fatally injured him. After this event, the band wrote a new version of the song dedicated to Thirsk and released it on the 1997 album Full Circle and on the live album Live @ The Key Club from 2000. The text was slightly changed (the names of the three friends were added instead of the full name of the bass player). This version is now played at the end of every concert.
