Porter Ricks

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Porter Ricks is a German dub techno project by the musicians Thomas Köner and Andy Mellwig .

history

Porter Ricks is named after a character portrayed by Brian Kelly in the 1960s television series Flipper .

The first publications appeared in 1996 on the Chain Reaction label operated by Moritz von Oswald and Mark Ernestus . In the same year the debut album Biokinetics was released, also on Chain Reaction. The album summarized some of the tracks previously released as a 12 "single as well as new compositions as a long player.

Already with the first releases, the project made obvious references to maritime themes both in terms of sound (extremely deep, "subsonic" tones, noise ) and in the naming of the pieces ( Port of Nuba , Nautical Nuba , Nautical Dub ) . However, it was less about pictorial images of the sea than about the musical meaning of the noise and the waves.

“The references to nautical science, however, are deceptive and ambiguous. Ultimately, it is not about imitating natural noises, awakening visual images or creating associations between the two. It's about the real connection between semantics and music. What do noise and waves mean musically, down to the depths of the creation process. "

End of the year appeared with Zebu a 10 "single with two pieces on the Dutch label Barooni on which Köner since 1990 some solo albums had published.

The second album, Porter Ricks , released in 1997 on Mille Plateaux , surprised critics and fans with some rather funky techno pieces. The singles Spoil / Spoiled and Explore / Exposed , later published on Force Inc. Music Works , also showed references to disco sounds.

A collaboration album with the British group Techno Animal and two highly acclaimed remixes for Nine Inch Nails ( The Day the World Went Away ) and Low ( Down ) followed by 1999 . Then Köner and Mellwig turned to their respective solo projects. Only in 2016 did a comeback begin with an appearance at the Atonal in Berlin's Kraftwerk , followed by the EP Shadow Boat as the first new release in 17 years. Another long player followed a year later with Anguilla Electrica on Tresor .
