The power plant Berlin on Köpenicker Straße 59-73 in Berlin district of Mitte is a place for various events and exhibitions since 1997 shut down the southern wing of the cogeneration plant Berlin-Mitte .

history

The Berlin-Mitte thermal power station was built around the same time as the Berlin Wall in 1961. The gigantic complex was East Berlin's power station and was in operation until 1997. In 1996, the northern extension of the central heating and power station went into operation, which led to the closure of the southern wing.

After the old building had been vacant since 2001, Dimitri Hegemann rented it from the owner company Vattenfall (similar to the operators of the Berghain Club, the former heating power station Am Wriezener Bahnhof ) and opened up part of the area for his techno club Tresor , which moved there in 2007. After further extensive renovation and reconstruction work on the 100-meter-long turbine hall, the event and exhibition venue Kraftwerk Berlin was opened on October 2, 2010 with the opening of the exhibition “Realstadt. Wishes as Reality ”presented to the public for the first time. The architecture exhibition staged on 8,000 m² dealt with questions about the future of the city. The exhibition included the presentation of around 250 miniature city models as well as 65 exemplary projects in text and images.

In cooperation with ZDF and Motor Entertainment, live concert recordings for the program "Berlin Live" took place at regular intervals in 2011 and 2012 and are broadcast on Arte and ZDFkultur . The bands and artists Einstürzende Neubauten , dEUS , Art Brut , Kasabian , Moneybrother , Calexico , Get Well Soon and Max Herre played . In December 2011 and March 2012 Christoph Hagel and the Flying Steps performed their show "Red Bull Flying Bach". In April 2012 the annual TEDx Change took place in the power plant .

In March 2012 the State Opera Unter den Linden showed Luigi Nono's socialist opera Al gran sole carico d'amore at Kraftwerk Berlin. In addition, the up-and-coming art fair “Berliner Liste” took place in the Kraftwerk Berlin in both 2011 and 2012.

On May 7, 2015, the disused power plant in Berlin was the first venue for the presentation of the German Perfume Prize, the “Duftstars ”, under the title “Duftwerk” .
