Fragrance Stars
The German Perfume Prize, Duftstars, is the highest award in the German perfume industry . The fragrance stars have been awarded annually in Germany since 1993.
history
The idea of honoring perfumes with this award goes back to the American Fragrance Foundation , which established the award in 1973. The prize is awarded in several categories, including classic, exclusive, lifestyle and prestige.
- Since 1997, outstanding personalities have been awarded an honorary award at irregular intervals.
- Since 2012, every perfume that has won the classic category has entered the Hall of Fame immediately . These fragrances will no longer be available in future elections.
- Since 2004, the Fragrance Foundation has been awarding the perfume award , the so-called audience award, on behalf of all consumers .
- Since 2017, niche fragrances have been recognized in the Artistic Independent Perfume category .
The award ceremony usually takes place in spring as part of a gala event at different locations in Germany.
After three events in the Tempodrom in Berlin, the Duftstars were awarded for the first time in 2014 in the Arena Treptow . This was followed by further awards at the Kraftwerk (2015-2017) and at Berlin-Tempelhof Airport (2018). In 2019, the award ceremony was held for the first time in Düsseldorf.
Name and organizer
Based on the American model, the award was also called the “FIFI Award” in Germany from 1993 to 2005. The “FIFI Award” then became the German Perfume Prize , and the winners became fragrance stars . The German Perfume Award is organized by the Fragrance Foundation Germany . It includes manufacturers and suppliers in the perfume industry, retailers and the media. The common goal is to maintain the perfume as a cultural asset, to present it as a luxurious accessory and to present its fascination to a broader public.
Choice, jury and criteria
A jury of experts from the fields of trade, trade press and design nominates the new perfumes and classics. Five perfumes per category (women and men) are selected. The names of the nominated fragrances will then be announced to the public.
A jury then selects the winners per category from the finalists. The jury is made up of experts who deal with fragrances on a daily basis: specialist journalists, designers, experts from industry and trade, from advertising and the media. The election takes place under notarial supervision in writing on a ballot paper.
Special rules apply to individual categories:
- Classics category: Only perfumes that have been on the German market for at least ten years and for which marketing activities were carried out in the election year can be nominated as best classics.
- Hall of Fame: Classics that have won three times before 2012 move into the Hall of Fame. Since 2012, every perfume that has won the classic category has entered the Hall of Fame immediately. These fragrances will no longer be available in future elections, but they will be given a permanent place of honor.
- Personality: The criterion for the personality award, which is awarded at irregular intervals, is the award winner's outstanding commitment.
- Audience Award: The winner of the audience award is chosen directly by consumers with an online vote or participation cards.

In addition to the regular prizes and the audience award introduced in 2004 - at that time still under the name Public FIFI - special prizes are awarded at irregular intervals. Outstanding personalities in the industry receive the honorary award, and some perfumes were inducted into the Hall of Fame until 2007.

trophy
The French designer Denis Boudard developed the trophy, which was first presented to the public on May 31, 2007. Boudard emerged as the winner of an international competition that the American Fragrance Foundation (founded in 1949) had announced in 2006. The previous model designed by Pierre Dinand has been on loan since 1975 .
