Eddie Argos, singer from Art Brut

The band was formed in 2003. She had her first appearance at Kentish Verge in May of that year. Later that year Art Brut recorded their first EP Brutlegs , which includes the first versions of Formed a Band , Modern Art and Moving to LA . Formed a Band then appeared on a compilation by Angular Records. A journalist heard the song and sent an MP3 to the Rough Trade label , who immediately made Art Brut an offer to release it as a single. Formed a Band was finally released as a single in the UK in May 2004 and peaked at number 52 on the UK charts. It was later named "Single of the Year" by the US Rolling Stone . Blender described Art Brut as the best previously unknown band in Britain. This was followed by appearances across the UK, including a. she toured with The Fades as a support band. A first anniversary concert was played in the Tate Modern .

After various successful single releases, their first album Bang Bang Rock & Roll was released in 2005. In that year Art Brut was part of a pan-European hype of British indie bands, the so-called "Class of 2005". The album was also highly praised in the German press, for example as “Album of the Month” in Musikexpress and “Beauty of Edition” in Visions . Art Brut also received a cover story in the German edition of Rolling Stone . Emily Kane was released as a single. The song addresses Eddie Argos' missed childhood love of the same name. At number 42 in the UK charts, she was the highest ranked singles released by Fierce Panda. Argos later announced that he liked the small failure of not making it into the top 40, since it didn't work out with Emily Kane at the time either. In addition, the album received a Metascore of 83. In September 2005, Chris Chinchilla left the band for personal reasons. He has been replaced by Jasper Future, the guitarist from Argos' old band, the Art Goblins.

The second album It's a Bit Complicated , produced by Dan Swift, was released in Germany on June 15, 2007. The clip for the first single, Direct Hit , was shot in Berlin. The second clip for Pump Up the Volume was made during a tour in Australia. The album Art Brut Vs. Satan gained special attention as it was produced by Pixies singer Frank Black . After a highly acclaimed tour it was initially quiet around the band.

At the beginning of 2010, singer Eddie Argos started talking when he was working on the side project Everybody Was in the French Resistance… Now! published. On the album, he and his partner Dyan Valdés from the band The Blood Arm interpreted answer songs to well-known songs from pop history. The album Brilliant followed in 2011 ! Tragic! on Cooking Vinyl . It was again produced by Frank Black, the CD cover was designed by the English comic artist Jamie McKelvie . On the ten songs Eddie Argos sang correctly for the first time according to his own statement.

The best-of album Top of the Pops followed in 2013 . In the same year, drummer Mickey Breyer and guitarist Jasper Future left the band. They have been replaced by Stephen Gilchrist and Toby Macfarlaine. Eddie Argos currently lives in Berlin.

Trivia

The band name is taken from the name of an art movement, Art brut , also called “Outsider Art”, which is explicitly made by people outside the “art circle”, e.g. B. Mentally ill, prison inmates etc. However, the band Art Brut pronounces itself as one would speak in German according to the script ( i.e. neither Art Brü nor Art Brüt or even Art Brat ), which can also be heard in the songs in which Eddie Argos often sings his own band name.
