Art-Punk or "Experimental-Punk" describes a style of playing of proto-punk , punk rock and post-punk with a philosophy that in part clearly stood out from the majority of the British punk movement. The term was used for bands like Television or the Patti Smith Group, who understood punk primarily as an art form. The members of the groups mostly came from art schools and were and are often active as artists and poets outside of musical activities. The main inspiration for most of the early art punk groups came from The Velvet Underground , which some consider to be the very first art punk band. Other predecessors of art punk are Rocket from the Tombs and Modern Lovers .

Musically, Art-Punk is rough and often aggressive, but also extremely experimental and lyrical, sometimes blues, jazz or folk and singer / songwriter elements are used. Forms of art punk that tend to emphasize performance are sometimes called “punk cabaret”.

In addition to Patti Smith , REM should be mentioned as a group that originally had its roots in art punk.

In the 1980s, however, the term "Art-Punk" was used less and less and corresponding bands were more likely to be categorized as post-punk , whereby the influence of the original Art-Punk on z. B. the no-wave movement, post-punk, post-hardcore , indie pop and gothic rock was enormous. Also, the anarcho-punk was in his early days with the band Crass strongly intertwined with the art-punk scene.

Since the success of modern art-punk groups such as The Dresden Dolls , Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Art Brut , the term has also been picked up more frequently by the mainstream media and the scene, which was previously seen as marginalized, is receiving more attention again.
