Terrie Hessels is the last remaining member of the original line-up from 1979. GW Sok, singer and lyricist from this original formation, left The Ex in 2009.

In The Ex's music, what counts is the anarchic will of expression, not harmonies or bars. The text is usually more important than other parts. Accordingly, most of the tracks have an explicitly political background, such as the benefit single Weapons For El Salvador from 1981, which was supposed to support the armed resistance in El Salvador , or the solidarity tour for the British miners' strike in 1983. The double single in 1936 attracted particular attention - the spanish revolution (1986) which, in addition to four pieces from and about the Spanish civil war, contained an extensive bilingual booklet (in the mini CD version hardcover book) that reports on the anarchist resistance of the Confederación Nacional del Trabajo .

The band is open to many musical influences: In 1984 they played with the Kurdish group Awara, in 1991 with the Saz player Brader and since the 1990s they have also performed with Sonic Youth , Tom Cora and with jazz musicians from the circle of Han Bennink and Misha Mengelberg ( ICP-Orchestra ), for example in 2000 as a 20-piece big band at the Holland Festival . They can also be heard on Gétatchèw Mèkurya 's albums.

None of the band members took music lessons.
