Mats Olof Gustafsson (born October 29, 1964 in Umeå ) is a Swedish saxophonist who plays all kinds of saxophones and is considered the outstanding representative of Swedish free jazz .

Live and act

Gustafsson began playing jazz in 1986 in a duo with Christian Munthe and from 1988 in the Gush Trio with Sten Sandell and Raymond Strid . He is strongly influenced by the style of Peter Brötzmann , with whom he and Ken Vandermark have formed the Trio Sonore since 2002 . Gustafsson has played in groups and projects with Paul Lovens , Paul Lytton , Georg Graewe , Barry Guy , Roger Turner , Pinguin Moschner , Jim O'Rourke , Thurston Moore , Colin Stetson and Derek Bailey . Since the early 1990s he has been in close contact with the Chicago music scene with Hamid Drake , Michael Zerang and Ken Vandermark and releases albums on the local label Okka Disk .

Gustafsson's long-term projects include The Thing , Fire! and Hidros . The trio The Thing, which he has formed with the Norwegians Ingebrigt Håker Flaten and Paal Nilssen-Love since 2000 , experiments on the border between free jazz and punk music . In 2012, The Thing recorded an album with Neneh Cherry ( The Cherry Thing ). In 2014 a live album with Thurston Moore was released . The Fire! (with Johan Berthling and Andreas Werliin ) also has a big band version (Fire! Orchestra); Several albums were created in both formations. As a trio, Fire! with Jim O'Rourke and Oren Ambarchi on albums. The series Hidros , launched in 1999, includes albums with changing, mostly larger groups that interpret the music of well-known artists - including Patti Smith , Little Richard and Frank Zappa . As part of Hidros, Gustafsson worked with Sonic Youth , Barry Guy , Joe McPhee , Axel Dörner, among others .

Gustafsson works with artists from the field of theater and dance theater , as well as writers and painters . Since 1988 he has released more than 80 records. In 2011 the saxophonist was awarded the Nordic Council Music Prize.
