Die Ludolfs - 4 Brüder auf'm Schrottplatz is a docu-soap of the German television channel DMAX . It was about four brothers who ran a car recycling business in Dernbach, Rhineland-Palatinate .
History of production
In 2002 the SWR produced a program about the 700th anniversary of Dernbach's village. The mayor made the film team aware of the Ludolfs. A short portrait of the four Ludolfs Uwe (* September 27, 1951), Horst-Günter (* February 22, 1954 - January 31, 2011), Peter (* August 5, 1955) and Manfred "Manni" (* 29 July 1962) and the then still living mother Marianne Ludolf, b. Krügener (1932-2005), shot. SWR later produced a two-part documentary of 30 minutes each with the title Schrott-Brüder - Die Autoverwerter aus dem Westerwald .
Various private broadcasters , such as Kabel 1 and RTL II , wrote additional articles about the Ludolfs for their magazine programs and reports. From 2006 the special interest broadcaster DMAX produced a television series on the subject. This became so successful that DMAX broadcast a 24-hour "Ludolf Marathon" for the first time on New Year 2008, which was repeated in 2009 and 2010. On the DMAX website it was possible to vote on which episodes should be shown in the new year's program of the station. In 2008 and 2009, this type of programming meant that the broadcaster had the highest daily market shares in its history.
On March 12, 2008, the fourth season of the series began, consisting of 17 episodes. In 2008 Erwin Hilbert produced the Ludolf brothers and their first musical setting, "We are the Ludolf brothers!" The fifth season started on January 28, 2009 with nine episodes. The sixth season started on April 1, 2009 and consisted of five episodes. The first episode of the sixth season premiered online on the DMAX website. The series can now also be seen on Dutch television (with subtitles) and, since the beginning of 2008, has been dubbed in Russian on Discovery Channel . The broadcast in other European countries is planned.
In February 2011 it was announced that the production of further episodes would switch from Preview Production to Good Times . The new episodes, each subdivided into five-minute " webisodes ", will initially only be published on the Internet.
On the afternoon of Christmas Eve 2011 , ProSieben broadcast a single episode entitled Schöne Bescherung with the Ludolfs with guests Charlotte Karlinder and “Checker” Thomas Karaoglan .
On July 26, 2012, Sport1 managing director Thilo Proff announced that the Ludolfs would be broadcast on Sport1 with a new broadcast format from September 5, 2012 . Every Wednesday from 9:15 p.m. to 10:15 p.m., the three brothers in SEK Ludolf - Das Schrott-Einsatz-Kommando could not only be seen in the junkyard during their everyday life, but also received a special order in each episode, which they performed in their own way should solve. In the first episode, for example, they pimped up an old Lincoln in order to compete in the 1/8 mile race at “Sport1 Trackday”, which was broadcast live.
action
The television series shows the life and work of the Ludolf brothers, who run a car recycling company. In over 30 years, up to his death, together with her father, the company founder Horst Ludolf (1925–1991), around three million car parts were collected on various heaps in a warehouse, according to her own statements. The way the brothers work and the parts store based on the “ heap principle ” are very unusual, which earned the car recycling in the vicinity a certain reputation long before the first film recordings. The series draws its charm from the different characters of the brothers, who are also perceived as humorous, as well as from the often bizarre-looking devotion with which they devote themselves to their work in the junkyard. Some episodes deal with family outings, such as the Ruhr area or Great Britain . In the eighth season, renovation measures are carried out in the company.
Recurring elements
In addition to canning, the recurring elements of the series also include the preparation of various oldtimers or the tuning , repairing and painting of older vehicles. In addition to their work, the brothers often organize races with vehicles that are ready for scrap or give themselves to various experiments in remote areas, such as a crash test or a moose test . After the first half, Peter prepares lunch for his brothers in almost every episode, mostly pasta , but often also dishes that fit the theme of the episode in question. For example, in the episode “Elk test à la Ludolfs”, in which two Volvo vehicles can be seen, he cooks his brothers with Swedish köttbullar . Manni uses a special kind of conflict resolution in several episodes: he insults his garden gnomes , whom he has named Günter, Peter, Uwe and Manfred, on behalf of them. Almost every episode ends with an evening dialogue between Peter and Manni, which quotes the take at the end of every episode of the television series The Waltons .
actor
The main actors of the show are Peter, Uwe, Manfred and Horst-Günter (Günter) Ludolf. Each of the four brothers has a special task.
Managing director Peter Ludolf knows exactly which car part he has put in the warehouse on one of the piles sorted by assembly. It is up to Peter (his own name: “The Computer Brain”) to find the parts the customer wants. Peter is unmarried and lives with the playful Manni in their parents' house on the company premises.
“Casanova” Uwe Ludolf, on the other hand, leads a middle-class life with wife Karin and three children, who should take over the business later if possible. Uwe and Manni (own designation: "Kraft und Hand", due to the division of labor into coarser and finer activities) are responsible for collecting and canning the junk cars. Manni has been married since October 10, 2012.
Günter Ludolf was responsible for direct customer contact. He took the telephone and personal customer inquiries and stoically passed them on to Peter for procurement. In addition, he took care of the issuing or packaging and shipping of the ordered parts. Günter suffered a life crisis after being cheated on by his wife. Since then he has spoken little, reluctant to move, no longer drove a car, smoked a lot and ate almost exclusively coffee and vitamin tablets during working hours. He died on the night of January 31, 2011 of complications from a heart attack .
Guests
In the episode "Daddy Cool", rappers Bushido and Kay One are looking for a replacement part for a Ford Fiesta.
Influence and perception
In the ranking show Die 10… the protagonists were certified as having “weird XXL careers” in 2009, and in general the success of the Ludolfs is often perceived by the media with amazement. According to the mayor of Dernbach, between 15,000 and 20,000 people came to the Ludolfs in April 2007 on the occasion of an “open day”, which is said to have led to a traffic jam on the nearby Autobahn 3 .
Media presence
The Ludolfs have already appeared on various television programs, including Schmidt & Pocher , TV total , Kerner , Sat.1 breakfast television and Stern TV . They also took part in some TV total sports events , such as the Wok World Cup in 2009 and 2010 and, since 2008, in the TV total Stock Car Crash Challenge . At the Stock Car Crash Challenge 2009, Manfred took third place for vehicles up to 1500 cm³ , and Uwe took second place for vehicles up to 1900 cm³. At the Stock Car Crash Challenge 2011 Manfred finished third in the 1500 cm³ class and won the so-called rodeo together with teammate Joey Kelly . The Ludolfs were also parodied in the television series Switch reloaded . Manfred also took part in the ProSieben reality show Die Alm in 2011 , in which he also won. In 2017 Manfred took part, together with his wife, at the summer house of the stars .
Promotion and other media
With the increasing popularity of the television series, efforts by the rights holders to re- use the brand increased. Some fans of the Ludolfs criticized this "commercialization". For those that reveal themselves in particular in the production of a single that the Ludolfs recorded together with Jürgen Milski , as well as in the futureTV offer, where each episode of the program was divided into several five-minute “webisodes”.
Motion picture
The Munich production company Preview Production, which also produced the docusoap on DMAX, shot the movie Die Ludolfs - The Film: Thank you for Italy in cooperation with Zorro Film GmbH . . Users could suggest the film title in the title competition on the Internet. The running time of the film is about 98 minutes, locations were among others the local Dernbach and Venice . Before the German theatrical release on April 9, 2009, a premiere party took place on April 4, 2009 with around 1500 guests in a rented tire warehouse in Daufenbach , to which the Ludolfs also came.
Rally participation
In June and July 2010 Preview Production produced a series special for Kabel 1 that accompanied the four brothers as participants in the Dresden – Breslau adventure rally. The two-hour documentary shows the way to the rally and the experiences within the race itself, which extends over eight days and a total of 1500 km. The Ludolfs started with the number 263, the support vehicle with the 264. It was first broadcast on July 17, 2010.
Books
So far three books have been published: Die Ludolfs - The book about the background to the series, Peter cooks with 40 recipes as well as memories from and on Horst Günter Ludolf with an illustrated book and biography of the late Horst-Günter Ludolf. In addition, a comic entitled The Ludolfs - The Curse of Tut Nich Imun was published.
Merchandising
Merchandising items can also be purchased from the Ludolfs, such as puzzles, calendars, coffee mugs, cooking aprons and clothing such as base caps, sweatshirts and T-shirts. The toy manufacturer Dickie Toys released a series of toys for the cinema release that showed the Ludolfs and some of their cars in small format.
