Dürrholz is a municipality in the Neuwied district in the north of Rhineland-Palatinate . The community is located in the Westerwald and is part of the Puderbach community .

history

Dürrholz is a historically evolved structure, the name has stood for the three villages of Daufenbach, Muscheid and Werlenbach for centuries.

Dry wood

The name Dürrholz indicates that the villages of Daufenbach, Muscheid and Werlenbach were created in the course of larger forest clearings in the 11th and 12th centuries. Other interpretations of the community name derive from the Franconian “durr” or “dern”, which means something like “much” or “large”. From this it can be concluded that the region was densely forested.

In the 15th century, the area of ​​the municipality of Dürrholz belonged to the high court of the Counts of Wied , the "Hohen Veste Urbach". The first written mention of the name Dürrholz comes from the year 1553 when Heinrich von Isenburg-Neumagen left his property to his cousins ​​in Grenzau and received the "Dorrholzer" serfs in the parish of Urbach. In the same year Dürrholz is mentioned as belonging to the "Hohen Veste Puderbach". The Urbach and Puderbach courts were abolished at the end of the 16th century and placed under the jurisdiction of the Counts-Wied bailiff in Dierdorf.

Daufenbach

In a document from 1395, Daufenbach is called "Duyffenbach", ie Tiefenbach. At that time Herford Abbey owned goods in Daufenbach. There was also the von Daufenbach family of knights . The name Daufenbach also indicates a wet, damp area.

Muscheid

In a document from 1539 Muscheid is called: "Mutscheid". "Mut", the abbreviation of the Germanic first name "Mutho", combined with the ending "Scheid", which means border. It could therefore be assumed that the villages of the community were founded in the period from the Great Migration to the introduction of Christianity. According to another interpretation, the name Muscheid comes from “moss” and “Scheid” in the sense of watershed or border divide.

Werlenbach

In the underlying literature there is only the indication that the place name Werlenbach is difficult to interpret.
