history

The accumulation of place names in today's municipality with the ending "-scheid" suggests that settlement began in Franconian times . In the 13th century, Breitscheid belonged to the Thuringian legacy of Mechthild von Sayn , which she gave to the Archbishop of Cologne , Konrad von Hochstaden , in 1250 . The Archbishopric of Cologne assigned the Breitscheid Honschaft to the Neuerburg Office , to which it belonged until 1803. Ecclesiastically and with regard to the lower jurisdiction , Breitscheid belonged to the parish Waldbreitbach in the Deanery Engers of the Archdiocese of Trier . The Breitscheid Honschaft comprised the same localities as today's local community, at times the Cologne part of Kurtscheid and Escherwiese also belonged to the Honschaft.

At the Reichsdeputationshauptschluss (1803) the electorate of Cologne was finally dissolved, the offices of Altenwied and Neuerburg, including Breitscheid, were awarded to Prince von Wied-Runkel as compensation for his lost properties on the left bank of the Rhine . As early as 1806, this area became part of the Duchy of Nassau when the Rhine Confederation was formed . As a result of the agreements made at the Congress of Vienna (1815), this area finally came under the Kingdom of Prussia and was initially assigned to the registrar district of Neuwied in 1816, and in 1848 to the district of Neuwied in the administrative district of Koblenz , which belonged to the Rhine province from 1822 on .

After the Second World War , Breitscheid became part of the then newly formed state of Rhineland-Palatinate within the French occupation zone . Since 1968 Breitscheid belonged to the Verbandsgemeinde Waldbreitbach , which merged in 2018 into the Verbandsgemeinde Rengsdorf-Waldbreitbach.

Breitscheid coat of arms
Blazon : "Split by a curled golden tip, in it four different high black hexagonal columns growing on a green three-mountain, five silver rings in front in green (2: 1: 2), behind in red three golden two-line ears."
Foundation of the coat of arms: The five rings are reminiscent of the lower aristocratic family “those of Breitscheid”, mentioned in a document as early as 1155. The ears of wheat symbolize the earlier importance of agriculture for the community. The Dreiberg indicates the location of the villages of Breitscheid above the Wiedtal. The pillars stand for the earlier basalt mining on the Roßbacher Häubchen , which is in the district of Breitscheid.

Economy and Infrastructure

The municipality has made efforts to increase the number of jobs on site and the financial strength by creating the preconditions for the settlement of further medium-sized companies by designating new industrial areas ("Breitscheid industrial park"). Favorable location factors are the close proximity to the A 3 and the central location to the metropolitan areas Rhine / Main, Cologne / Bonn and Neuwied / Koblenz.
