The Verbandsgemeinde Rengsdorf-Waldbreitbach is an administrative unit in the legal form of a regional authority in the Neuwied district in Rhineland-Palatinate . It was created on January 1, 2018 from the voluntary merger of the municipalities of Rengsdorf and Waldbreitbach .

Around 26,000 inhabitants live in the association's community on an area of ​​around 124 square kilometers in 20 independent local communities . The administrative headquarters are in Rengsdorf , there is an administrative office in Waldbreitbach and a branch office in Anhausen .

The previous association communities Rengsdorf and Waldbreitbach were created in 1968 as part of the Rhineland-Palatinate functional and territorial reform from the Rengsdorf and Neuerburg offices, which came from the Prussian era .

In 2010 the state parliament passed the "First State Law on Local and Administrative Reform" with the aim of improving the efficiency, competitiveness and administrative power of local structures. For municipalities it was determined that they should include at least 12,000 inhabitants (main residence on June 30, 2009).

With 9,397 inhabitants, the community of Waldbreitbach fell short of the minimum number of inhabitants, while the community of Rengsdorf had 16,434 inhabitants on the reporting date.

On October 7, 2016, the mayors of the two municipalities of Rengsdorf and Waldbreitbach signed an agreement for a voluntary merger.

On April 13, 2017, the “State law on the merger of the municipalities of Rengsdorf and Waldbreitbach” was passed in the state parliament.

On the occasion of the formation of the new association, the state granted an allocation of 2,000,000 euros.

Association municipal council

The term of office of the first municipal council runs from January 1, 2018 until the local elections in 2024, the election itself took place on September 24, 2017. The election times of the previous municipal councils of the municipalities of Rengsdorf and Waldbreitbach ended on December 31, 2017.

The first mayor of the new community of Rengsdorf-Waldbreitbach has been Hans-Werner Breithausen (SPD) since January 1, 2018. In the runoff election on October 15, 2017, he prevailed with a share of 56.63% of the vote, after none of the original three applicants had achieved a sufficient majority in the direct election on September 24, 2017.
