The place is located in the Westerwald northeast of Rengsdorf and extends east and above the Birzenbach . The state forest borders Dierdorf to the west, and the Steinkopf rises to the north ( 386  m above sea  level ).

history

In 1321 the place was first mentioned as Harterode in a lease document from the St. Kastor Abbey in Koblenz .

The place name, which later also reads Hartenrode or Hartert, contains the Middle High German words "hart" and "-rode". "Hart" was the name for high forest or mountain forest, "-rode" indicates that the settlement was built on cleared terrain, whereby the syllable "-rode" has changed to today's final syllable "-ert".

The von Hartenrode or Hardert family died out in 1553 with Johann von Hartenrade . Then Hardert comes into the possession of the Counts of Wied .

For centuries, Hardert was shaped by agriculture and forestry. In the second half of the 20th century, the number of farms fell sharply.

coat of arms

Hardert coat of arms
Blazon : “The red coat of arms shows two obliquely crossed, overturned swords with silver blades and golden handles, the left one in the shape of three-quarters of a clover-leaf cross. On both sides there is a golden oak leaf with an outward-facing acorn and at the bottom a golden corn ear with two bent leaves. "

The coat of arms was approved by the Koblenz district government in 1981 .

Justification of the coat of arms: The swords indicate the noble family of those von Hartenrode, from whom the place name Hardert is derived. They are also depicted on the seals of Heinrich von Hardert (1483) and Johann von Hardert (1523 and 1543). The oak leaves symbolize the abundance of forests and the ear of wheat the agriculture of the community. The colors red and gold are borrowed from the coat of arms of the counts, later princes of Wied, to whose territorial property Hardert belonged for a long time.
