Due to the EU expansion in 2004 , Kleinmaischeid was the geographic center of the European Union until December 31, 2006 , replacing the Belgian municipality of Viroinval . On October 10, 2004, a memorial was inaugurated on this occasion, which shows a circle . When Romania and Bulgaria joined the EU on January 1, 2007, the geographical center shifted to Meerholz , a district of Gelnhausen in Hesse .

The calculation was carried out by geographers from the French National Geographic Institute (IGN) in Paris . They indicated the position of the EU center as 50 ° 31 '31 "north latitude and 7 ° 35' 50" east longitude .

history

The first documentary mention as Metschet took place on January 20, 1148 through a confirmation document from the Laach Monastery (today Maria Laach Abbey ) from Pope Eugene III. In this letter to the Laacher abbot Gilbert († 1152) the Pope mentioned the Salic tithe (decimae salicae) to Maischeid , which was attributed to a gift from Rembaldus de Isenburch (Reinbold von Isenburg). This donation was obviously used to equip the Laach Monastery, which was founded in 1093. The "Laacher Hof" (sometimes also called "Hof Maischeid") was, as later documents show, in the district of Kleinmaischeid.

The place name with the ending "-schet" ("-scheid") indicates that the settlement was created in a high medieval clearing phase, "-scheid" means Scheide = border, which means places that served as border towns. The syllable "Met-" can be derived from a personal name such as Mato or Metfried . Count Metfried von Wied could have been the founder. According to another interpretation, Reinbold von Isenburg (* 1092, † 1121) could also have been the founder, the place name Metschet would then mean “limit to Metfried's property”.

The “Laacher Hof” had two mills and extensive forests. Due to financial difficulties, the Laach Monastery sold the farm to the Archbishop of Trier and Elector Arnold von Isenburg in 1255 . After his death (1259) he came back into possession of the Laach monastery. From 1353 the “Laacher Hof” is also called “Hof Minkelfey”, this name appears in the Laach documents for the first time in 1428. This late adoption of the name is probably due to the fact that the monastery also had an eponymous monastery near Polch Owned farm (in today's Minkelfeld district of the municipality of Kerben in the Mayen-Koblenz district ).

A court court with a mayor and lay judges belonged to the “Hof Minkelfey” . The monastery of Laach had the right to own the farm, the Counts of Wied exercised the property right. The Laach monastery sold the farm to Count Heinrich von Isenburg-Grenzau for 580 guilders in 1539 , and in 1575 the monastery sold the rights to the forest property to Count Johann zu Wied .

Count Salentin VII von Isenburg-Grenzau, son of Heinrich, sold numerous rights to Archbishop Lothar of Trier in 1600 . This included the "Smiling farm in Klein Meyscheid" and the forest property called "Buchholz".

In addition to the Laach monastery, the Fulda monastery had properties in Kleinmaischeid. In a document from 1388, Count Salentin von Isenburg (an ancestor of the aforementioned Salentin) certified that he owned the "Dorff Meisthuyt" (village Maischeid) as a fiefdom . The fiefdom was hereditary. However, the Fulda monastery had possessions in the Westerwald well before that, as can be seen from property records from the 9th century.

After the death of the last Count of Isenburg, Count Ernst von Isenburg-Grenzau († September 30, 1664), the fiefdom fell back to the Fulda Monastery. Thereupon they awarded their share of the loan for castle and spots Isenburg as well as the "Kirspell Meyscheitt" (parish Maischeid) with the village "Kleinmeischeitt" to the barons of Walderdorff . The Counts zu Wied then made claims from the paternal legacy for Isenburg. A between Johann Philipp , Freiherr von Walderdorf, and Count Friedrich III. The settlement negotiated to Wied was confirmed in 1666 by the Abbot of Fulda. This comparison led to a common rule of the houses Walderdorff and Wied-Neuwied (from 1700 Wied-Runkel).

coat of arms

Kleinmaischeid coat of arms
Blazon : "Silver split by a curled red tip, inside a silver abbot crook, in front a green three-leaf beech branch with an unopened fruit cup, behind a black faceted high cross."
Reasons for the coat of arms: The colors red and silver indicate that Kleinmaischeid belonged to the Isenburg-Grenzau rule from the 12th to the 17th century. The Rembold main line of the Isenburg family had two red bars in a silver shield. The high cross refers to the old manorial connection to the Fulda monastery. It has a continuous black cross on a silver background as a coat of arms. The abbot's crook refers to the property of the Laach monastery. The beech branch indicates the abundance of forests, more than a third of which is still made up of beech trees.

With a 3.50 meter high sculpture in the form of a circle, the municipality of Kleinmaischeid shows that it was the geographic center of the European Union between the EU enlargements on May 1, 2004 and January 1, 2007 . Prime Minister Kurt Beck (SPD) inaugurated the memorial on Sunday, October 10, 2004.
The sculpture consists of a circle on a map of Europe. One of the two tips of the 3.50 meter high stainless steel circle sticks into the stone map of Europe on the ground, namely at the point where Kleinmaischeid (Neuwied district) is located. A circle of twelve floor lights is supposed to symbolize the twelve stars of the EU flag. The sculpture was designed by the Bad Kreuznach artist Gernot Meyer-Grönhof .
