About this picture

Meinborn (dialect: Mämer) is a municipality in the Neuwied district in the north of Rhineland-Palatinate . It belongs to the community of Rengsdorf-Waldbreitbach .

geography

The place is on the edge of the Westerwald directly on the hill of the Neuwied Basin in the Rhine-Westerwald Nature Park south of Rengsdorf .

history

The place was first mentioned in a document in 821 as "villa Meineburum in pago Engrisgoe", as part of the Engersgau in a document from Emperor Ludwig the Pious. For example, the document issued by Emperor Ludwig tells of a "common man" (quidam homo) called Fulquin, who was given back his own property for free disposal, which he had once handed over to an imperial administrator in trust when he went to war against the Slavs. This typical transfer of property to secure one's own property can be proven in many places in the early Middle Ages and in this specific case was tied to the condition: "If he should return alive, he would get his property back, otherwise it should be donated for the salvation of his soul." The Lords of Isenburg, a long-established noble family, which was first mentioned in 847/868, exercised manorial rights in their function as bailiffs of the remote property of the Fulda Abbey. According to a document in the Hessian-Lahngau Kartular (without Gau indication), the remote possession resulted from the donation of a Berhtrud, which numbered the goods in the village of "Meinabara" with three hubs, one of them a man's hat, a forest, 15 servants, two yoke fields and three meadows . Bruno I (* before 1179 † before 1210) of Isenburg founded the Isenburg-Braunsberg line with the construction of a castle on the Braunsberg around 1200, which on March 5, 1243 in consultation with Count Palatine Otto near Rhine, acquired the rights to the County of Wied childless uncle Lothar von Wied (d. 1244) should inherit in equal shares with the lords of Eppstein. However, the shares of the Lords of Eppstein were sold to the Counts of Virneburg as early as 1306. The lordship over Meinborn was then exercised by the Counts of Wied-Isenburg until the middle of the 15th century. With the extinction of the second count house in the male line, the manorial rule fell to Dietrich IV von Runkel, the founder of the third count house (Wied-Runkel), who was married to a niece of Wilhelm von Wied-Isenburg. The lordship over Meinborn remained until 1806 with the counts from 1784 Prince of Wied.
