Melsbach is a municipality in the Neuwied district in the north of Rhineland-Palatinate . The community has been part of the newly formed Rengsdorf-Waldbreitbach association since January 1, 2018 .

Geographical location

The place is on the edge of the Westerwald directly on a hill at the Neuwied basin in the Rhein-Westerwald nature park southwest of Rengsdorf near the Wied .

history

In 1956, a bronze bucket ( Situla ) was found on the site of what was then the clay mine of " Didier-Werke AG " , which was assigned to the Hallstatt period (600 to 300 BC) and which is now in the Neuwied District Museum. This suggests that the area around today's Melsbach was already inhabited in the Bronze Age . The first written mention of Melsbach dates back to 1267: Count Gottfried von Eppstein , the younger, sold his ancestral farm.

In 1278 Melsbach belonged to the parish of Rengsdorf. In 1357 Melsbach became a customs post. The Kreuzkirche was first mentioned as a place of pilgrimage in 1399. In 1747 Melsbach came to the parish Altwied . Around 1750, blue roofing slate was extracted in nine pits on the Laubach .

When the entrepreneur Heinrich Wilhelm Remy needed coal for his iron and steel works and the “ Rasselstein ” rolling mill in the Wiedtal near Neuwied , around 1780 he had drillings carried out in what is now the Melsbach district of Kreuzkirch, where coal deposits were suspected. However, only unusable brown coal was found between clay deposits . However, in 1786 the princely Wiedische forest and mountain ridge Engelhardt recognized the raw material of alum in the clay deposits , which led to the construction of the oldest alum plant in the Rhineland in the Kreuzkirch district . It was shut down in 1880 and demolished in 1882. The Melsbach sports field is now located on its former spoil dump .

In 1863 the first Melsbacher fair with the wine Melsbacher Goldberg took place. In 1865 the Melsbach Boys' Association was founded. In January 1896 the first school building was built in Melsbach and an elementary school was set up. In 1907 the Melsbach volunteer fire brigade was established. Twelve years later the sports club SV Melsbach 1919 eV was born. Active gymnasts and footballers had come together.

As a result of the armament of the Wehrmacht in the Third Reich , steel production flourished again from 1935 . The associated growing demand for clay for lining the blast furnaces made the clay deposits in Melsbach for the companies “ Dr. C. Otto & Comp. "( Bendorf ) and" Didier-Werke AG "( Wiesbaden ) are interesting. The latter had a mining shaft built to a depth of approx. 86 m in 1938/39 . After mining was interrupted in the Second World War, clay mining was resumed in 1948 and continued until the plant was closed in 1983. The clay mine of the “Dr. C. Otto & Comp. ”Was operated until 1990.

In 1971 the elementary school Melsbach was to be dissolved as a result of the state-wide school reforms. After repeated protests by several local councils, however, it was decided to set up a community primary school in the school building. It still exists today.

From 11 to 14 August 2017, the place celebrated its 750th anniversary.

As part of the special tradition of the 100th anniversary of SV Melsbach 1919 eV, a game between the SV Melsbach all-star team and a selection of Bundesliga club Borussia Mönchengladbach , including ex-team captain Hans-Jörg Criens , was played on June 15, 2019 . The game against the Weisweiler -Elf, the traditional team of Borussia Mönchengladbach, was lost with 1: 4.

"Football plays a major role in the village, it brings people of all generations together."

Culture and sights

Cultural monuments

Kreuzkirche

Ruin of the Kreuzkirche in Melsbach

The Kreuzkirche was possibly built around the year 1399, at least it is mentioned for the first time in documents from this time. But it may be significantly older. The name of the actual client and builder is unknown. When it was first mentioned, the Kreuzkirche was part of the St. Thomas Abbey in Andernach . Until around 1558 it was an important and much-visited place of pilgrimage. Then it was given up and fell into disrepair. Documents from 1625 already refer to them as “ruins” and “former” pilgrimage sites. The ruins were added to a small homestead, which until 1880 contained the entrances to the alum factories. Today the Kreuzkirche is under special monument protection.

limes

Only a few meters from the Kreuzkirche, scanty remains of the Limes can still be found today . The remains of the Limes wall were relatively easy to see until around 1962, and several boundary stones were still in situ . Today only boundary stone No. 45 remains.

Headframe

Not far from the Kreuzkirch ruins is the iron winding tower of the disused clay mine of Dr. C. Otto & Comp. , it was built around 1938/1939. Although it is still possible to visit the winding tower today, it cannot be climbed due to the risk of collapse.
