Railway stations in Rhineland-Palatinate |
The Neuwied station is a hub of public transport in the west of the Rhineland-Palatinate town Neuwied . It is located on the right-hand Rhine route and is the starting point for the route to Koblenz over the Urmitzer Rheinbrücke. There is a bus station on the station forecourt . In the urban area there is also the Engers train station , also on the right-hand Rhine route.
history
When the left Rhine route was opened in 1857 , there was a station near Weißenthurm called Neuwied . The ferry traffic between Neuwied and Weißenthurm was carried out by the railway company from 1860 onwards.
Today's Neuwied station was opened in 1869, at the same time as the right-hand Rhine route. In the first years, especially after the opening of the Westerwaldbahn (1884), the Engers station was more important than the Neuwied station. Only after the construction of the Kronprinz-Wilhelm-Brücke (predecessor of today's Urmitz railway bridge ) between Engers and Urmitz and the opening of the Neuwied – Koblenz railway line in 1918 did the station gain in importance, especially after the Westerwaldbahn ceased operations.
In the Second World War was the reception building destroyed about 75%. After the Second World War, due to the need to look after refugees and former prisoners of war , Caritas, headed by Maria Mechelen , opened the station mission. On December 22, 1947, near the provisional Wiedbrücke in Neuwied, a serious railway accident occurred when the express trains D 269 and D 48 collided, 42 people died and 116 injured.
When rebuilding the reception building, the responsible Federal Railway Directorate in Mainz decided because the non-contemporary forms bear witness to an outdated architectural style and the reconstruction would have been made easier if the bombs had completely destroyed the old building , despite the fact that around 25% of the historical building fabric had been preserved demolish and replace with a new building in the style of the 1950s.
At the beginning of October 2011, the first construction phase to modernize Neuwied station was completed. As part of this construction phase, the platforms were made accessible with two elevators. In addition, the staircases were renewed and new wall and floor coverings with an integrated guidance system for the blind were laid in the underpass. In preparation for the second construction phase, the platform edge in the area of the elevator of the central platform of tracks 2 and 3 was increased to 55 centimeters and the roof in need of renovation was replaced by a modern roof. Dynamic script indicators were also set up. This conversion cost 1.7 million euros, which were paid out of the economic stimulus package .
As part of a second construction phase, the renovation and elevation of the house and central platform was planned. The modernization of the travel center in the train station was completed in December 2012. This measure cost 60,000 euros. The second phase of construction began in summer 2014 and was officially completed on November 28, 2014.
