Rheydt Hauptbahnhof is the name of a train station in the Mönchengladbach district of Rheydt . The station is a through station and belongs to station category 4.

location

The station is located about 300 meters south of Marienplatz in the center of Rheydt at the intersection of Bahnhofstrasse with the streets Moses-Stern-Strasse and Wilhelm-Schiffer-Strasse, which are part of Rheydter Ring. It is oriented in a north-south direction. On the forecourt east of the station there is a bus stop for public transport . Mittelstrasse runs west of the station. On this side there is another stop system that is used at events in the Nordpark .

Infrastructure

Railway lines

In the area of Rheydt Central Station, the Rheydt – Cologne-Ehrenfeld railway and the Iron Rhine to Dalheim branch off the Aachen – Mönchengladbach railway , which continues north to Mönchengladbach Hauptbahnhof .

In the southern part of the station, the freight yard, the Mönchengladbach freight bypass line begins , which meets the line from Mönchengladbach to Duisburg in Viersen-Helenabrunn . There is also a parking facility for the trains to the Wegberg-Wildenrath test center in the freight yard .

Between the branch of the freight bypass and the routes to Dalheim and Aachen, there was still a branch from the route to Cologne for trains coming from Aachen until World War II. This led over a ramp to a flyover structure, with which the other two routes were crossed without crossing. This was followed by a bridge over Wickrather Strasse, before the track swung into the route between the passenger station and Odenkirchen, which is still in place today.

Reception building and platforms

The first reception building of the station was opened with the section of the Aachen – Mönchengladbach railway between Herzogenrath and Rheydt on November 11, 1852 and was located in the area of today's central platform between tracks 2 and 3. The station was opened during the construction of the line to Odenkirchen extensively rebuilt and received a new station building further east, which was put into operation with the new line in 1907. The old station building was initially retained - now in an island location between the tracks - and was only demolished in 1978 to make room for a new platform roof.

In the Second World War, the station facilities were severely damaged, including the second station building. Therefore, a new station building was built and opened on December 6, 1952. The Universum cinema was operated on its upper floor from 1956 to 2008, with the last three halls. The reception building with the windowless facade characteristic of a cinema hall has been preserved to this day and continues to serve its original function. It was bought at the end of 2015 by the development company of the city of Mönchengladbach (EWMG), which plans to “sell the entire site as part of a competitive process and develop it according to the urban and conceptual design.” According to plans from the end of 2015, the reception building is to be demolished.

Rheydt main station has four platform tracks:

  • Platform 1: Freight trains passing through (the platform can only be reached from Cologne), platform length 232 m,
  • Track 2: trains in the direction of Mönchengladbach (except: RB 34), platform length 170.9 m,
  • Track 3: all trains from Mönchengladbach, platform length 194 m,
  • Track 4: RB 34 from Dalheim, entry / exit to the marshalling yard, special football trains with the option of changing to the shuttle buses to Borussia-Park , platform length 197.8 m.

The shuttle buses have their own lane in the area of the former platform 5, which was dismantled for the bus stop.

Deutsche Bahn is planning to convert the platforms and access routes for 1.8 million euros, which, according to the original plans, should be completed in 2019. The central platform on tracks 2 and 3 and the platform on track 4 are to be extended to 220 meters and have a continuous height of 76 centimeters above the top of the rails over this length. The background to this measure is the planned operation of today's Wupper-Express with the vehicles of the Rhein-Ruhr-Express (RRX). The plan envisages the construction of elevators to these two platforms and a guidance system for the blind to achieve barrier-free access. An elevator to platform 1, however, is not planned. In addition, a new wayfinding system and new platform equipment with weather shelters, seating and bright lighting are to be built, and the station will be monitored with video cameras in the future. The first construction work on the platform extension took place on March 15, 2019 and began on track 3. After this first section was completed in early April 2019, work was suspended until May 2020 when construction work on the extension of a second platform began. These should be completed in the fourth quarter of 2020. Despite multiple tenders, no company has yet been found to build the elevators and the guidance system for the blind. Work on the guidance system for the blind can therefore start at the end of 2020 at the earliest and the completion date for all construction work is unclear.

Operating facilities

Until 2007, Rheydt Hauptbahnhof had two mechanical interlockings that went into operation in 1907, a dispatcher interlocking (Rpf) and in the north a guard interlocking (Rpn), the former freight yard (Gbf) included the dispatcher interlocking (Rmf) and the attendant interlocking Rn, Rs and R1. Until 2007, these controlled the switches and signals at the stations, which until then had been fully equipped with form signals . A Bahnbetriebswerk (Bw) for the maintenance of the traction vehicles with two turntables also belonged to the Gbf . The depot was closed in 1975.

The station has been connected to the Grevenbroich electronic signal box since November 2007 and the old form signals have been replaced by Ks signals . The buildings of the mechanical signal boxes were preserved, but on May 25, 2011 a fire broke out in the signal box Rs and the fire ruins were demolished in the same year.

Long-distance transport

In October 2009, Deutsche Bahn announced that Rheydt Hauptbahnhof will again be operated by long- distance passenger rail services when the timetable changes on December 13, 2009 . Since then there has been an intercity connection from Aachen to Dresden via Berlin on Fridays and a connection in the opposite direction on Sundays, both serving Rheydt Hauptbahnhof. The routes of long-distance connections since December 2009 are as follows:

Train number Days of traffic Line course
IC 1918 Friday Aachen - Herzogenrath - Geilenkirchen - Rheydt  - Mönchengladbach - Neuss - Düsseldorf - Duisburg - Essen  - Dortmund - Hamm  - Bielefeld  - Hanover  - Wolfsburg  - Berlin  - Dresden

On December 16, 2013, another long-distance connection was added on working days except Saturdays with IC 2222/2223 (departure times from Rheydt Hbf 7:48 a.m. / 7:11 p.m.):

There is a connection to numerous NEW mobil and aktiv Mönchengladbach bus lines to the surrounding area (including to Korschenbroich , Viersen , Grefrath and Jüchen ) from both Marienplatz and the station forecourt .

Naming

A curiosity is the fact that the Rheydter Hauptbahnhof is the second Mönchengladbach Hauptbahnhof. After the independent city of Rheydt was merged with the city of Mönchengladbach for the second time during the regional reform in 1975 after 1929, the station was not renamed by the Deutsche Bundesbahn . Since then, Mönchengladbach has been the only city with two train stations that are referred to as the main train station.

A possible renaming of the station has been under discussion since January 2008. The Deutsche Bahn AG , the Ministry of Transport of North Rhine-Westphalia and the Verkehrsverbund Rhein-Ruhr , in whose tariff area the station is located, wanted to adapt the name of the station to the political realities that had prevailed since 1975 and to adapt it to the usual DBAG conventions - rename it to Mönchengladbach-Rheydt . This led to protests from politics and the population, where the name Hauptbahnhof is associated with a higher status and fears that after an alleged downgrade due to the renaming, urgently necessary investments in the renovation of the reception building and the access systems would be omitted and tracks would be dismantled and connections abolished in the future. The special status of Rheydt with its own main train station and the city of Mönchengladbach as the only city with two main train stations are to be retained, according to the will of some citizens. Thereupon, North Rhine-Westphalia's transport minister at the time, Oliver Wittke , assured that the station would continue to have the main station in its name. The city council had until February 28, 2008 to respond to the VRR's proposals. The main station will initially continue to be called Rheydt Hauptbahnhof.

In future, the train station will be called Mönchengladbach-Rheydt Hauptbahnhof .
