history
The opening of the station took place in 1847. From 1906 to 1909 the line and the train station were raised to remove the level crossings in the city area. Since then, the station also bears the addition of the name Hauptbahnhof . Until 1950 there was also a station of the Krefeld Railway Company (KEG), the original route of which is now used by Bundesstraße 9 . This Krefeld Süd station was rebuilt during the elevation in the south of the track apron, but the trains did not enter the main station. The tracks of the south station were removed before 1996, there is only a short connection from the main station to the line of the former KEG, now SWK Mobil, which is mainly used by the Schluff museum railway .
The station was assigned to station category 2 by the end of 2012 . Since January 1, 2013, the station has been assigned to station category (today price class) 3. The former importance of Krefeld as a railway junction declined after the closure of the large Hohenbudberg marshalling yard and the freight yard east of the main train station, as well as after long-distance passenger transport was discontinued. However, the DB vehicle maintenance plant in Krefeld still exists as an important operating facility . a. ICE trains come for maintenance.
Investments
Today the station has five platform tracks on the main platform and on two island platforms. Access is through a tunnel; there are lifts between the platform and the tunnel. There are also a few sidings.
East of the station is the former Krefeld depot , which is a listed building.
