The Opladen train station is a train station in the Opladen district of Leverkusen . It is one of six rail traffic stops in Leverkusen and is located on the Gruiten – Cologne-Deutz railway , where the Leverkusen-Schlebusch railway station is also located, while the other stations are on the Cologne – Duisburg railway . The station is important for commuters both in the direction of Cologne and in the direction of Wuppertal.

After the closure of the railway repair shop in 2003 and a reduction in the number of railway facilities, the New Railway City of Opladen was created , with the tracks, platforms and access routes to Opladen station being rebuilt and modernized in recent years.

history

Establishment and expansion in the 19th century

Development of the Opladen railway junction
Opladen station of the Bergisch-Märkische Eisenbahn (1867–1965)

As early as 1845, the Cöln-Mindener Eisenbahngesellschaft had built a train station on the Deutz – Düsseldorf line in Küppersteg, at that time part of the Opladen municipality . However, this route did not directly affect the municipality of Opladen.

The railway pioneer Friedrich Harkort had already proposed routes in his book The Railway from Minden to Cöln in 1833 , which should cross the Wupper at Opladen. In fact, a corresponding route was not implemented until 1867, when the Bergisch-Märkische Eisenbahn-Gesellschaft (BME) built a branch line on the Düsseldorf – Wuppertal line to the south from Haan , the end of which was initially Opladen. A year later the line was extended to Mülheim and in 1872 to Deutz . The station building erected in 1867 remained in function until 1965.

In 1874 the Rheinische Eisenbahngesellschaft opened a line from Troisdorf via Düsseldorf to Mülheim - Speldorf , which crossed the BME line in Opladen. Since it was not possible to agree on a common station with the BME, a second one was built directly opposite the existing station, which was not closed until 1890 - long after the nationalization of both railway companies.

With the opening of a branch line to Remscheid-Lennep , which has since been closed, in 1881, Opladen became a railway junction with the usual facilities such as a freight yard with a marshalling facility that took over the distribution of goods for most of the railway stations on the right bank of the Rhine between Cologne and Düsseldorf, a railway depot with roundhouse and turntables and a larger-sized local freight facility to be able to reload goods.

The repair shop opened and continued to operate until the Second World War

In 1903 a main workshop of the Prussian State Railways was opened in Opladen ; In the years that followed, this led to a significant increase in the population of Opladen and brought about significant improvements in the urban infrastructure. As a later repair shop in Opladen , the workshop was one of the most important employers in the city and the surrounding communities for the next 100 years.

In 1910, a second track to Bergisch Born was put into operation on the branch line to Remscheid-Lennep , which was dismantled again in 1958. Since the line had no level crossings on the same rails, it served as an ideal test track for the locomotives and railcars maintained in the repair shop. In the 1970s, electrification was even considered, as the Opladen plant mainly operated electric locomotives , but the plan was not carried out.

Opladen's role as a railway junction led to the bombing of Opladen during World War II, as the destruction of the railway systems not only affected the regional distribution of goods and the repair shop, but also interrupted two of four routes between Cologne and Düsseldorf.

Operation in the second half of the 20th century

The station building of Opladen station opened in 1969 and demolished in 2015

From the 1950s, the importance of Opladen as a traffic junction declined, so that the railway systems were initially not renewed and gradually reduced from the 1960s. In 1960 the depot was closed, but the repair shop initially continued. It was closed in 2003. In 1965 the station building from 1867 was demolished and replaced by a single-storey new building. Passenger traffic on the route from Opladen to Hilden (route book route 409) was stopped on September 23, 1983. The last remaining section of the route to Remscheid-Lennep, popularly known as the Balkan Express , was closed on June 1, 1991. Around the turn of the millennium, various shunting tracks at the station were dismantled.

Current operation and renovation from 2014

The Gruiten – Cologne-Deutz railway line is still used by passenger traffic today; Regional express and regional train trains stop at Opladen station. The Troisdorf – Mülheim-Speldorf railway line runs past Opladen station to the west and is used exclusively for goods transport in the Opladen area.

A large part of the 72 hectares of the former railway facilities lay fallow for a long time. As part of the Regionale 2010 , the New Bahnstadt Opladen project was presented as a solution for re-use. The aim is the construction of residential and commercial buildings as well as the abolition of the urban separation of the Opladen and Quettingen districts through the former railway facilities. This project also has an impact on the design of the Opladen train station. The freight tracks on the Troisdorf - Mülheim-Speldorf line, which previously ran around fifty meters to the west of the station in an elevated position, were swiveled directly to the same level as the track on the Gruiten - Cologne-Deutz line. The plan approval procedure for this measure was started in January 2014 by Deutsche Bahn. Furthermore, a pedestrian bridge with a length of 106 meters was built, which is connected to the platforms of the Opladen station via covered escalators and elevators. The groundbreaking ceremony took place in April 2014 and the foundation stone was laid in May 2014. The bridge opened in 2015.

In 2015, the station building from 1965 was demolished to make room for the planned relocation of the freight track. At the same time, the platforms at Opladen station were renewed by Deutsche Bahn as part of their "Modernization Offensive 2". The height of the platforms has been increased to 76 cm to enable barrier-free access to the trains that stop. Of the total costs of 4.7 million euros for these measures, 4.3 million euros were borne by the Federal Republic of Germany and Deutsche Bahn, the remaining 400,000 euros are contributed by the state of North Rhine-Westphalia .

The double-track freight line was swiveled over the site of the former station building to the Cologne - Wuppertal railway line and put into operation in December 2016. However, it has no platforms at Opladen station. The embankment along the Opladen city center was then removed, the site is to be used for urban planning for residential and commercial buildings and an administration building. As part of the modernization measures, the Opladen bus station is to be relocated from its current location directly to the train station. The train station and bus station are currently 160 m apart.
