Wuppertal Hauptbahnhof is a train station in the urban area of Wuppertal . Originally it was the train station of the town of Elberfeld, which existed until 1929 . As a through station , it connects the Düsseldorf – Elberfeld and Elberfeld – Dortmund lines . It is located immediately south of Elberfeld city center, Wupper , suspension railway and federal highway 7 on the slope of Döppersberg .

Around 40,000 travelers use the 1,000 trains that stop each day. The station building, built in 1848, is one of the oldest of its kind.

history

In 1841, a few years after the first train run in Germany, the Düsseldorf-Elberfelder Eisenbahn-Gesellschaft's railway line reached its end in Elberfeld. It was the first steam-powered railway connection in West Germany and the second in Prussia .

In 1847 the route from Elberfeld via Hagen to Dortmund followed. This section of the route was built by the Bergisch-Märkische Eisenbahn-Gesellschaft and was soon connected to the line to Düsseldorf.

A first provisional station building ( former station reception building Elberfeld ) was no longer sufficient after a few years. After the breakthrough to the Düsseldorf – Elberfeld line, this station was abandoned and a classicist new building by the architects Hauptner and Ebeling was built further west. Around 1900 a porch was placed in front of the ground floor, which seriously disrupted the architecture. However, this basic concept was retained during the reconstruction after the Second World War . This only changed again with the complete renovation of the main station / Döppersberg area.

The station has been renamed several times in its history. At first it was called Elberfeld, a few years later it was renamed Elberfeld-Döppersberg and before the First World War the name was changed to Elberfeld Hauptbahnhof . On September 1, 1930, the station was named Wuppertal-Elberfeld as a consequence of the founding of the city of Wuppertal . In 1992 the last name was changed to Wuppertal Hauptbahnhof. The nearby central Döppersberg stop of the Wuppertal bus routes was also renamed; The suspension railway station has also been called Wuppertal Hbf (Döppersberg) since then .

Before the renovation work began, the train station building and suspension railway station were connected by a 200-meter-long tunnel under the B 7 until January 2015. The tunnel was popularly called the urethra due to neglected cleaning .

The reception building of the Wuppertal main station is located right on track 1 and is connected to tracks 2-5 by a tunnel. Above the entrance, which is near the old Elberfeld Railway Directorate , four prominent pillars rise up and support the roof.

In 2001, Deutsche Bahn set up the central lost property office here.

The original building is one of the oldest major city train stations in Germany . It is a three-storey square building that is bordered by tower-like corner projections . The main entrance in the middle of the building is emphasized by a four-column portico with Corinthian capitals and heavily antique ornaments. The ground floor originally had arched openings, the rectangular windows are still arranged in six axes to the left and right of the portico. The ground-floor hall porch, which was arranged around 1900, was necessary to take account of the increased space requirements for counters and waiting rooms.

The reception building is part of a building ensemble built in the classicism style, which is grouped around the station forecourt. On the west side of the square is the administration building of the former Reichsbahndirektion Elberfeld , on the east side there was the residential building of the director's office, which was demolished after the Second World War.

The construction of the main station was accompanied by extensive urban development projects on Döppersberg. A direct connection between the city and the train station was created from the old city center through the Döppersberg bridge over the Wupper.

Redesign since 2014

The entire area around the station was extensively redesigned by 2018. Preparations for this began in summer 2009, and on June 30, 2009 the symbolic starting shot for the new, modernized main station was given. The main aim was to create a continuous pedestrian and shopping zone from the train station to the city center, as already exists in many other cities, such as Cologne, Stuttgart or Hanover. The B 7, which is a busy thoroughfare, was relocated to a tunnel for this purpose, while a pedestrian area was created above.

Since the completion of the work in 2018, the area in front of the classicist former station building has been divided into two levels. On the area where the station building, which was erected after the Second World War, is located, there is a large station forecourt and to the east of it a new bus station , which replaces the bus stops that were previously on the B 7. It was built over the car park with 200 spaces next to the train station. Below the station forecourt there is now a two-storey shopping level, the so-called mall , in which the access tunnel to the tracks begins and in which the DB Travel Center 2019 has also been in operation since 2019, so that this mall represents the new reception area of ​​the station. This station lobby can be reached from the city center via a bridge on which there are other shops including a café and which leads over the B 7, which has been lowered by around seven meters for this purpose. To the east of the bridge, also at the level of the reception area, there was also a striking building with a bronze-colored facade design in which a Primark branch is operated. Originally, a building in the form of a glass cube was to be erected at this point.

Course of remodeling work

The modernization of the Deutsche Bahn reception building started in 2014, with investments of 12.4 million euros planned. These modernizations should be completed in 2016.

As part of the renovation, the bus station was temporarily relocated from Döppersberg to Ohligsmühle and Wall at the timetable change in July 2014 , for which purpose it was converted for two-way traffic. From the end of October 2012, the Döppersberg street was first lowered and from the end of February 2013 the eastern part of the front building at the main station was demolished. The tenants in this area - drugstore, pub, bank branch, bakery and fast-food restaurant - were given notice in autumn 2012 and they closed their branches. The DB travel center was temporarily housed in a container building at the western end of platform 1.

In July 2014 the B 7 was closed, in August 2014 the superstructure of the Döppersberg bridge was removed. The pedestrian tunnel that ended there was closed in January 2015. Instead, a steel replacement footbridge led over the B-7 construction site. A 300 meter long footpath had to be covered around the station building. The B 7 was opened to traffic again from July 2017.

At the end of August 2017, an electronic signal box went into operation in the Wuppertal area. 387 signals, 98 points and 374 kilometers of cable were installed for this. Track and overhead line work was also on the agenda. The station was completely closed for the work during the 2017 Easter and summer holidays. Instead, a total of 90 replacement buses operated.

The platforms on tracks 1 and 4/5 were also modernized by 2019. This included the complete reconstruction to a height of 76 cm (the S-Bahn platform on tracks 4 and 5 previously had a small section that enabled barrier-free entry into trains with an entry height of 96 cm above the top edge of the rails ) and the installation of guide strips for the blind . A lift was also installed between the pedestrian underpass and the platforms on tracks 1 and 2/3 to enable barrier-free access to all platforms. From 2020, a modernization of the access tunnel is also planned, which leads from the station lobby to the tracks and represents one of the last areas of the building, which largely corresponds to the condition before the renovation work.

The restoration of the historic reception building was originally the responsibility of the railway, which wanted to find a private investor for the renovation and use by spring 2019. The railway also planned to sell the single piece of land to the right of the train station, on which there are still various ancillary buildings, to Stadtwerke, which wanted to build the valley station of the planned cable car there. However, this project was abandoned after 61.6% of the participants in a public survey on May 26, 2019 voted against it. According to Deutsche Bahn, it is in talks with "multiple interests". The selection process had meanwhile been stopped in order to await the result of the public survey and will continue after the city council's decision to end the cable car project. According to Deutsche Bahn, a buyer for the historic station building of the main station and the ancillary buildings is to be announced in summer 2020.

Although the main train station has only five tracks, and thus fewer than other train stations in the city, all trains passing through Wuppertal stop here, except for the S 68 that ends in Wuppertal-Vohwinkel .

Long-distance trains stop every 30 minutes in each direction on tracks 1 and 2. The ICE line 10 Cologne - Berlin enables a direct connection to the federal capital in under four hours.

Bus transport

After the bus station at Wuppertal Hbf had been divided into several replacement stops for four years, a new bus station was opened at the end of November 2018, which is directly connected to the platform of track 1 and now again centrally bundles a large part of the Wuppertal bus routes.
