The main railway station in the Elberfeld district is one of the most important stations on the Wuppertal suspension railway . It opens up the Elberfeld center and is named after the Wuppertal main station . It used to be called Döppersberg , like the neighboring intersection , this name is still listed as an additional name on the station signs. The stop is the busiest on the suspension railway as it is located at the city's main transport hub.
location
The suspension railway station is located in the center of Elberfeld and connects directly to the pedestrian zone in the direction of Elberfeld center. Opposite the suspension railway station on the other side of the Bundesallee ( B 7 ) is the main train station and bus station.
In addition to the suspension railway station between the main train station and the Brausenwerther bridge, there was also Wuppertal's central bus station , the main train station , until summer 2014 , with which it formed the most important local transport hub in Wuppertal.
history
First construction
The suspension railway station Döppersberg was designed in 1900 by the Berlin architect Bruno Möhring in the form of Art Nouveau . The iron construction was characterized by its avant-garde steel frame construction. Popularly known as the "Elberfeld Bathtub", the construction was perceived as annoying and ugly in its last few years.
New building
In the 1920s, the previous building could no longer cope with the number of passengers, and the Art Nouveau building was considered obsolete. In 1923, a competition was therefore announced for a new building as part of a redesign of Brausenwerther Platz and Döppersberger Bridge . Using the results of the competition, the station was built together with the Köbo-Haus to the south by the Barmer architect Clemens Julius Mangner and the Siemens-Bauunion Berlin . The new building was completed on March 20, 1926.
The station is the busiest and, like the stations Kluse , Alter Markt and Zoo / Stadion, has two stairways per platform. In 1992 it was renamed Wuppertal Hbf (Döppersberg) as part of the renaming of the Elberfeld train station in Wuppertal Hauptbahnhof . Until January 2015, the suspension railway station was connected by a pedestrian tunnel to the central bus station and the main station of the Deutsche Bundesbahn.
Remodeling Döppersberg
In the course of the Döppersberg renovation , the surroundings of the suspension railway station have changed since August 2014. Initially, the bus station next to the suspension railway station was closed, temporarily relocated to the neighboring Ohligsmühle station and completely demolished at the old location. In January 2015, the pedestrian tunnel that connected the suspension railway station with the main train station was closed. Instead, the suspension railway station was accessible from the main station via a replacement steel footbridge.
Since 2018, the main train station bus station has been located right next to the station's reception building. The suspension railway station is connected to it by a wide bridge flanked by shops over the federal highway 7 .
